Gray Suit, White Shirt, Black Tie and Black Shoes

Gray suit, white shirt, black tie and black shoes. I dressed for a funeral this past Friday for the first time in many years. Hopefully it will be many years before I have to do it again.

See you on the other side Michael.

I have had to write three letters of condolence during the past two weeks. I empathize.

I hope this doesn't sound flippant, but I do have a question about funereal dress. I have to attend a burial at Arlington National Cemetary in D.C. next month. It is at 3 PM and I know from experience that it will be brutally hot. Is the only appropriate suit a grey wool? I can't get away with a cotton suit, white shirt and black tie can I? This is really a case of bearing the heat (as will the honor guard in Dress Blues) with good graces, right?

Again, I am sorry to hear of your loss.

You don't say but I imagine you're asking about a tan suit?

I doubt if anyone will think less of you for wearing tan to an afternoon burial outdoors. A black tie and white shirt will probably place you in the more solemn half of the attendees.

I'm sorry to ask via such an old posting, but this seems like the most appropriate venue.

At this time, I am not scheduled to attend any funerals (thank God), but I would like to be prepared. I have the gray suit, black tie, and plain black shoes. However...

I have only two white shirts, and would like figure out which is least inappropriate. One is an Oxford cloth button down (too casual), and the other has French cuffs (too dressy). If the latter is preferable, what sort of cufflinks would be appropriate? (I'm thinking navy or black silk knots, but am open to suggestion.)

I suggest the shirt with French cuffs, accompanied by black silk knots.

Thank you, Will. Let's hope it's many years before either one of us, or our elegant friend, Chris, need to attend another funeral.
