The Shirt as Background

Complementing last week's essay on the shirt as the centerpiece of the day's clothes, here's an example of the shirt used as as a neutral background.

Tan glen check worsted with an orange overcheck, cream shirt and blue ancient madder necktie with light blue, green and orange paisleys. The pocket square is navy silk and, for someone will surely ask, the shoes are chestnut semi-brogues.

Very sharp look. Thanks - and thanks for describing the shoes.

Well done, Will. Excellent. I love that look. I wear a similar ensemble to work most days. I prefer sport coats with patterns (e.g., plaids, checks) so I generally wear neutral shirts.

And the socks???

Just looking at this picture again because it is a visual masterpiece. My eyes may be deceiving me but are you wearing a v-neck t-shirt? Is that the line of the "V" I see through the shirt? When I wear a shirt and tie, I wear a white crew neck t-shirt so as to minimize lines under the shirt. When I wear an open collar, that is no tie, I wear a v-neck so that one cannot see the t-shirt. Under no circumstances do I go without a t-shirt or wear a wife-beater. I don't know the technical name for a wife-beater. You did an article on briefs - maybe it's time for one on t-shirts?

At my old firm, a partner wears no undershirt beneath his Turnbbull & Asser shirts. I'd hate to see the armpits of his shirts. Probably all yellow stained.

Blue and brown herringbone.

John, you have a good eye. Very helpful comments. I would be interested in Will's reply. I consider dress shirts to be disposable, so I generally don't mind wearing them without a t-shirt, taking care of course to wash them regularly. I haven't researched this subject that thoroughly, but I would say about 50% of my colleagues (in financial, hedge fund, and investing circles) go without a t-shirt, as far as I can discern. I would be interested to know what others do about the t-shirt issue.

John, you do have a good eye. I am wearing a scoop necked undershirt in the photo, and I promise not to do it again. :-)

If I can find suitable visuals perhaps it is time for an undershirt post.
