If you're wearing black tie tonight, and I certainly hope you are, remember to wear a boutonniere. A red carnation is the customary choice.
Though it's said to be a symbol of friendship in the U.S., perhaps a young and very serious looking Prince Michael of Kent is aware that in Germany a yellow rose is a sign of jealousy and infidelity.
Have a great evening!

Great post Will. I am buying another one of your top 20 clothing books today, The Boutonniere: Style in One's Lapel. I will be interested to see if anything is mentioned about proper colors to wear at various times of day. I notice yellow is worn in this photo during the day. I wonder if yellow is equally ok during the evening hours.
Also, if I ever decide to actually wear one for a function, I will have to get an actual working button hole in my jackets. They are all sewn up.
Many thanks for all the work you have done in 2007. Greatest wishes for a prosperous New Year
That was Prince Michael? For a moment, I thought it was a shaggy John Cleese...
All the best to you for a truly great 2008. I'm looking forward to more of your sartorial suggestions throughout the year.
