A Friday Suit

An older 3 roll 2 Alan Flusser suit made from a still older Hunters of Brora 15 ounce dress tweed. Worn without the vest on a dank Friday in San Francisco. Small burgundy on white check on the Turnbull & Asser shirt, pink silk pocket square (also from T&A), Nicky gold on burgundy necktie and Edward Green Rye oxfords in chestnut antique.

Hunters of Brora was a tweed mill in Northern Scotland that began operations in 1901 and enjoyed an excellent reputation. The original mill was shuttered in 1985 in response to a general decline in the European textile industry and the market's move to lighter cloth, and several attempts to re-start the business have enjoyed little success.

This make of jacket, which Flusser advertised as his Anderson & Sheppard influenced model, proved to be not very true to the original and too boxy for my taste. Like the textile market, I have moved on. But I still love this cloth.

Will,

I like how the top buttonhole of your 3 button jacket rolls the way it does. And I like the collar of your T&A shirt.

I bought a T&A shirt this past Summer (my first one) for about $265. It was a classic blue stripe with white contrasting collar. Although the shirt fits me fine, I do not like the shape of the collar and so have never worn the shirt. All of their ready-mades seem to have the same kind of collar which are too big in my opinion. I will have to get them custom made as I like the shirt otherwise.

As coincidence will have it, I was in Flusser's on Friday with a friend who was in town from Philly. He had never been there and wanted to visit. They showed him all around the store 3rd and 4th floors while I looked at the socks and pocket squares. After the fiasco with the 6 shirts I had made there 2 summers ago, I have moved on as well - even though I still get their Christmas mailings and invitations to their private parties. In fairness to them I did lose weight in between fittings but the shirts were still too big even without that.

But great outfit you have here.

Thanks for the post.

Will, that's a wonderful suit! I love the 3/2 roll, the colour of the cloth, and the trouser cuffs. Does the jacket have darts? I can't tell from the pic. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice Will. The color chroma of the ensemble is complimentary. I’m completely indecisive about placing an initial order with T&A – one day I’ll come around. The garment appears to be pre-Raphael tenure, yes?

John - I love T&A (haha). I've actually got a number of T&A shirts and really like them. If you're looking to dump that shirt, just let me know...

Will,

I love the suit and your blog, and I have recently started my own called WASP 101 (http://wasp101.blogspot.com). I am a young man that enjoys classic and traditional clothing.

I have a suit very similar to yours, and mine has a vest as well. We were fortunate to have had really cold weather this weekend, and I broke out my suit. I paired it with a tattersall shirt and a burgundy club tie.

Laguna, I am quite a distance from that suit today. I don't think it has darts but I'm not certain.

Smii, you have an educated eye. It is pre-Raphael.

Scott,

Because you're such a good fellow, it's yours. I'll bring it with me to dinner tonight. It's even dry cleaned and ready for wear. I never wore it once except to try it on. French cuff, no pocket and great collar if your head is the size of Fenway Park.

Are you coming out of a chelsea restaurant? GR?

Great look. Especially, the shirt and tie combination against the suit. Very well put together.

I like the suit but the color of the shoes is a little bit much. Shoes should blend in with a man's attire not dominate it.

Those EGs are beautiful. I love the way the shiny toes mirror the white splotches on the pavement in this photograph.
