Hickey Freeman opened its third company store a few weeks ago, in the Four Seasons Hotel complex on Market Street in San Francisco. The American suit maker's new store follows two Manhattan outlets and is to be followed in turn by a Chicago location this year. I haven't owned any HF clothing since I was a young man but I've kept a soft spot in my heart for the brand. And you can see why from the display of clothes for boys. It almost makes me wish I had a child the right age for that stuff. Almost, but not quite.
I was a little disappointed in the selection. I know the company makes some great looking tweed suitings but what was evident instead were the same racks of year-round clothing that they sell at Nieman Marcus. But I guess I can't blame them for stocking what sells, and there was a good looking seersucker in the store window.
I wish the new store well and I'll definitely be back to window shop. Turns out there's a delightful little cream puff store a few doors away that's also nice to window shop.

Though not directly related to today's posting, I thought I'd mention that Ben Silver held its semi-annual warehouse sale last Saturday. As usual, it was a great chance to pick up some fine neckties. One item worth mentioning is their paisley print on gummed silk. Seems to me this tie is a little difficult to find these days, and I was glad to see Ben Silver carries it. It's also available on their website's factory outlet section as the "Madder Paisley Tie." If paisley isn't your preference, they offer a "Madder Geometric Tie" version as well.
When I think of Hickey Freeman, I think of classic ivy league style. I don't own anything from hickey, but I love their hard nosed reputation for sticking to classic style.
But richard, have you seen the "Hickey" line HF has branded?
It looks like a nice store - and similar in layout to the 5th Avenue Store. I sometimes walk into the 5th Ave location but have yet to buy anything. Maybe something will catch my eye one day. I still recall the New York Yankees baseball announcers on the radio say Hickey Freeman was the official clothier of the Yankees or something similar to that.
Thanks for the post Will.
Nice post, Will. Hickey Freeman is a wonderful brand. I have two HF suits, including one in a nice lightweight tweed. I had my eye on a HF sport jacket in a beautifiul blue windowpane pattern; sadly they don't make it in a Long. Their plaid suits and sport jackets are very attractive.
Was the cream puff shop the SF outlet of Beard Papas? If so, I hope you did more than window shop.
I don't remember the name of the shop. Guess I'll have to go back. :-)
Will, thank you for the post. I shall be visiting there in a week's time when we visit San Francisco. My wife, of course, will be in the cream puff shop, while I shop. She is expecting and thanks you immensely for your recommendation.
Beard Papa's is in the basement food court of Westfield Center. A very tasty treat! This post reminded me to stop by.
