Inspired by Plaids

I am inspired by plaids today. After retiring some of the flashier items on my shirt shelves, I realized I'd gone too far. My city shirt wardrobe is currently weighted too heavily towards semi-solid shirts and simple stripes, an oversight that will be remedied with plaid shirts made from these Thomas Mason fabrics.

Now just a few men wear plaid shirts and perhaps others may think themselves not quite bold enough to make a plaid statement. But boldness is not really necessary. One trick that helps de-emphasize the complexity of a large check like the swatches in the photo is to combine them with a white collar and cuffs. Worn with a double breasted suit or single breasted with a waistcoat, there's only a peak of pattern setting off the necktie.

Yes indeed, fourth and fifth from the top will be just the ticket for the spring sunshine.

I have recently favored plaid shirts with a navy blazer and navy tie with white dots or just open collar with a navy blazer.

They look like nice fabrics.

Upon contemplation of my wardrobe, I do realize, it's rather colorless, with the exception of ties and squares. Even my hose lack any true color. With spring on the way (or "here", since it is 80 degrees in Southern California), I am going to make it a point to add some color. Will, it would be fabulous if for a future posting you could show one of these plaid shirts as part of a day's ensemble. I think a visual would truly help me in this area. Thank you so much.

Will,

I agree with Turling. It would be great to see these shirts in completed form and with your tie and suit combination.

Also, as I mentioned previously, I am having shirts made when Hemrajani comes to town next week. Does he use these fabrics? I checked his website but do not see where he buys his shirt fabrics.

I love plaid shirts, but like the other gents, I find my closet is full of colorless shirts. I always love plaid when I see it, but I am hesitant to make the purchase knowing that matching a tie will be tricky. Great post, and I to would like to see the completed ensemble.

John, his "luxury fabrics" (which are the only ones you ought to consider IMO), are principally Masons.

I have plaid shirts that I wear informally instead of behind a jacket and tie. When I go to wear the jacket and tie however, I'm always caught staring at the plaids for a few seconds longer, and wishing I could make it work somehow. Red tartan is a bit harder to diffuse though isn't it...

How long does your shirtmaker take for making new shirts, from ordering to delivery?

Depends on the time of year. 2-3 months.

I've gotto say I don't really like the fabrics you posted.
I love a plaid shirt, but the plaids on the picture are IMHO to big. Also, beeing I'm just 24, they feel a bit more suitable for the refined gentlemen of a respected age.

I've been looking at making the leap to plaid, but like most here I am a bit gun shy about them. I've had three made, and they still haven't left the house.

Plaid shirts with a solid suit?

Plaid shirt with a glenurquhart suit?

Then the tie... I always drift torwards a solid. Other patterns seem to just clash. Pocket square?

What are your thoughts?
