Maintenance: The Hanger Project

Among the good things to come out of the Ask Andy About Clothes forum was a project to design and source a great hanger for suits that would be available to AAAC members. Just as shoe trees help preserve shoes, quality hangers help preserve a suit’s shoulder construction and drape. Hundreds of thousands of hangers later, The Hanger Project has turned into a full-time job for founder Kirby Allison. It offers customers around the world high quality hangers for shirts and trousers as well as suits, and has recently begun offering shoe trees.

Like other Web-based businesses, the Hanger Project is able to deliver a more finely tuned product line for men with tailored clothing than any retailer could ever stock. For example, the suit hanger is available in three widths—17.0, 18.5, and 20.0 inches—that provide shoulder support for all jacket sizes. Suit hanger pricing begins at $22.

The Hanger Project ships by the postal service so the cost is reasonable. Shipping to Europe for six hangers is $45, or less than 20% of the total purchase.

Items I am sorely lacking are shoe trees and proper hangers. They look like great hangers - thanks for the info.

Happy President's Day.

Will, do you know where these hangers are made?

I bought hangers just like the one you displayed from Brooks Brothers. They have the wide ends to emulate the shoulder, and they are wood with the Brooks engraving on the bottom. I bought them at a factory outlet store for $1.00 a piece. I bought the entire box, and I got 45 hangers for $45.00. I will never get that lucky again!

Please help me understand: I would assume that the hanger should be in in unfinished wood, to help absorb moisture and regulate humidity in the closet? And, in cedar, would keep moths off one's wool clothes..

Not trying to be sarcastic; what's your good understanding on unfinished vs. finished wooden hangers? Thank you.

Chris had a really good point-- doesn't the material these are made out of contribute to what happens to the suit that hangs on it? I must admit, these are stunning, but wouldn't better materials make them last longer and even keep moths away? I think they are so worth the cost, you should try to get on with a major hotel chain that would buy millions of them for their guests to use.

Thank you Sylvia. :)

My impression--probably from reading Flusser way back--is that absolutely the key thing with unfinished wood is humidity and otherwise atmospheric control.

I got the impression that this is almost as vital as shoe trees (which soak up the ~"pint of sweat the average foot puts out a day") v/v humidity regulation for clothes that are only cleaned a couple times a season, at most, like trad wools.

Any hotel /I went to, I would want to see /unfinished wooden hangers. Form follows function. ;p

cheers.

--related note: didn't a Cambridge U. study demonstrate about five years ago that wooden cutting boards have natural bacterial control effects (...and thus are more hygenic than poly boards). I sense something similar is at work here, too..keeping things fresh...

I emailed The Hanger Project and received this reply. And tho I think it's a bit off, I feel I should post it here, in fairness:

"We have considered the possibility of an unfinished wood, but we found the risk of snagging the fabric of a bespoke suit too high and costly to warrant any moisture-absorbing properties of unfinished wood. Typically, this property is best utilized with shoe trees. However, who wants their suits to smell like cedar!"

(Note: I've been using cedar shoe trees for nine years--some of you probably have for decades--and they do not make shoes smell of cedar. :| )

"A properly fitting suit hanger supports the jacket at the shoulders. If proper spacing between garments is respected, jackets are still able to properly 'air' while still benefiting from the superior support of our hangers.

Does this answer your question? The only unfinished hanger on the market I am aware of is from Woodlore, and they only offer one size. It also does not feature a felted trouser bar or the degree of contouring that we offer. However, it is unfinished. Just watch out for possible snagging.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
