I have to admit that I picked this photo up somewhere on Style Forum, neglected to note the source, and now I have no idea how to credit it. I hope the subject of the photo will identify himself because I think he's showing men with high contrast coloring a good way to accessorize a gray suit.
Lower contrast skin and hair would look washed out in this combination but a white shirt and a gray suit make an outstanding pairing for men with dark hair. Here the gray wool necktie adds texture, and the brown oxfords and bitter red socks contribute some discreet color. Very nicely done. The fireplace, bar and dog are gilt on the lily.

I like the texture of the tie and like how the socks complement the shoes. But on the whole, I'm not sure I like the socks here. They seem too distracting.
Hi Will. That's me in the photo, and thanks for the kind words. John - I chose the red socks because it was New Years Eve and I was trying to look festive, but I'd probably do it again in another setting. You have to remember that they aren't visible 95% of the time, so I think the splash of color is nice in small doses.
Great suit. Good look. Although I'm always a bit iffy when it comes to brown shoes at night. But that's just my weirdness coming though.
Have to say, that i agree with John. The socks would need a little bit of color in the upper part of the ensemble, maybe a little bit of red in the tie, a pocket square or a carnation. But i like the peak lapeled suit.
Will, what do you recommend for those of us with LOW color contrast (hair has all gone gray)? I certainly like that shade of gray suit and would not do without a couple of them. Would you accesorize differently?
p.s. I sometimes wear burgundy socks with a gray suit.
His pants are too long. The illusion is shattered!
Another white-haired fair-skinned fellow in love with that suit wonders how to wear it. Thanks Will.
Men with low contrast coloring should accessorize gray suits with the colors that work for their skin tones. There's not space for a treatise on colors here but a light blue shirt will be successful for most.
