Mixing Four Patterns

Checked suit, striped shirt and paisley madder pocket square make three patterns (I don't count the oxford weave of the necktie and you shouldn't either). Click on the photos to see them enlarged.

And argyle socks make four.

The key to pattern mixing is to keep the scale of the patterns different so they don't conflict with each other. This particular mix might be a bit much for an office but I was headed for an afternoon art exhibit where some complexity is not out of place.

Will,

I haven't used the word "awesome" since I was a teenager, but that is the first word that came to mind when I saw the shirt/tie/jacket combo. And I love that tie. You were definitely the hit of the art exhibit - I'm sure.

Will,
Unlike John I use the word "awesome" on a daily basis. Today I used it twice.

Will,

I too think your pattern mixing is awesome. I recently purchased a black and white check suit (much like yours) but with a yellow over check. What color shirt/tie would you suggest I pair it with?

Franklin, that's hard to say without a photo. Yellow can pair well with lilac. Or if its tone is more of a mustard color, try it with browns and/or greens that have black in them.
