Once the snow disappears, a pair of ankle high suede chukkas serves well on the weekend. It (the weekend, that is) is also the opportunity for mid-calf socks in colors and patterns.
I'm wearing chukkas today with dark green cotton drill trousers, a tan silk shirt and a cream linen sweater. And yellow socks, for consistency with the illustration.

Will,
Here is one for your reader’s questions section.
I have always thought that a mans shoes should have leather soles and heels; yet as I peruse the Alden, Crockett & Jones, and Allen Edmunds’ catalogs I see lots of various sole configurations.
Can you share your thoughts on when each is appropriate?
Will,
When would it be ok to wear midcalf socks versus over the calf? I don't want this to come across as being sarcastic, but is there a time when it's ok to show bare leg when crossing your legs and time when it is not?
Well, Mr. Turling, that would be never. Ever.
Turling, I think mid-calf socks are fine when you're going to be active. That means you'll be standing and no calf will be exposed.
I have never owned these although I like them on others.
On the weekend I usually go with saddle shoes from Ralph or loafers from LL Bean.
