It's a month early in the season for the hat in the illustration, but if you are in Northern California and happen to see a man attired like the guy in the illustration, say hello. It's probably me.
I probably over-do solid tan odd jackets. Tweed patterns in mid-weight worsted for warm weather wear have always seemed like a bit of a perversion of purpose to me, so solid linen, fresco and gabardine make up most of my Spring and summer odd jacket wardrobe.
And when I'm looking for something to wear in a weight between a heavy tweed and a warm weather jacket, I reach for gabardine. It wears too warm for hot days, but it's perfect for temperatures in the 60's and 70's (farenheit). Add a shirt and a light-weight pair of gray flannels and I'm almost ready to walk out the door.

Excellent timing. I'm going to visit Brooks Brothers this weekend and will be looking at the gabardine, although probably for trousers. I have a bonus check burning a hole in my pocket. Ok, let's be honest, I don't have it yet, but I'm a firm believer in spending a bonus at least four times before it is actually received. Thanks for the post. Keep up the excellent work.
Great post, Will. I really like tan or beige coloured sport jackets (incl. tweed) for warm weather wear. Just the other day, in fact, I wore a beige linen jacket, flannels in mid-grey, white spread collar shirt, navy knit tie, and dark tan tassel loafers to a reception at the local golf club. I always find it tricky trying to match light-coloured jackets with darker trousers, and I don't know if I have it down yet. But in the Southern California climate, I am discovering that lighter weight jackets are the way to go.
Beautiful photo, Will. I cannot wait until Spring.
Trad: That sounds like a great combination you had.
Will: I am looking at a tan sports jacket at Paul Stuart which is unlined and a nice summer weight. It has patch pockets and side vents. I did not buy it yet because they also have a great blue seersucker jacket that I am thinking about as well. Still deciding between the two. Oh, heck, maybe I'll just get both and have 2 nice jackets for the Spring/Summer.
Turling, good luck with the trousers.
