Jack Buchanan (1891-1957) was the British Fred Astaire (or perhaps Astaire was the American Jack Buchanan). Debonair, and always well dressed, he shows us here that pocket square and boutonniere, sometimes deemed too busy in combination, can look fine together. The key is to keep the square simple.

Great photo find, Will. I've only seen photos of Buchanan as a younger, more 'dandified' man.
I am inclined to think that the absence of color is also a contributing factor. What are your thoughts?
He is impeccably dressed indeed, but I couldn't help but notice that he buttoned the bottom button on his suit. Am I too much of a perfectionist?

It is not incorrect to button the bottom button of a DB. Indeed if anything it is more correct, or at least more traditionalist. Note that Prince Charles, aka Super Fogey, always buttons it.
Thank you for the clarification, C. I guess that the same "rule" that applies to 2B and 3B suits applied in this case.
