The decline of the west, or rather mens' evening dress, was there for all to see at San Francisco Ballet’s New Works Festival recently. We should be thankful that mothers continue to teach their daughters how to wear clothes. Certainly some fathers forgot to teach their sons about the proper length of a pair of trousers.

Will, I think the young man is actually wearing his fathers suit. And, his father is obviously 6'7". This goes back to your post yesterday about the gentleman forced to purchase a bright blue raincoat. The poor gentleman on the right was forced to scour local garbage cans in order to glue enough Hefty garbage bags together to come up with something to wear. Luckily for him, he was able to find some bags in camouflage. Poor chap.
I could have not said that with so little words. I am writing a new post in my blog about that and I must say I totally agree with you. To me those suits are just ridiculous.
By the way, where people can get stuff like those suits? I would not know where to start
I would say that the lengths of their trousers are the least of their problems. :)
The guys look like excellent candidates for a certain Sarty blog. On second thought, perhaps they're too conservatively dressed.
Bounders abound.
Awful. 60 years ago they would have been laughed out of the festival by men who knew how to dress.
Turling, even Hefty garbage bags are not that ugly. This is a post for the Sartorialist's website where all the 22 year olds can oohh and ahhh.
Admittedly, the suits in question were not the best choice for those two gentlemen.
However, the hostility towards a certain other blog is ridiculous. Funny, a group of people who believe they know how to "dress" have absolutely no idea how to "act." I always thought those two things should go hand in hand.
I would note that dogmatic adherence to a set of fashion rules is not always the better approach. It is why mens clothing is often referred to as a uniform. The truly fashionable always do things a little different. Otherwise there is no individual expression.
Fathers? This is San Fransisco, right? What are fathers?
Just awful--this is "creative black-tie" at its worst.
I wonder where the fellow on the right found a titanium snake to skin for his suit.
This photo illustrates an important point. When attending a formal or semi-formal event, or just a night out, women continue to understand that clothing is meant to accentuate their figure and so focus attention on it and themselves. They dress accordingly. Men have come to believe that clothing should stand out so as to draw attention to itself and for its sake rather than to the man--thus outrageous clothing which attracts attention.
Well said brentstarks.
Ah.. the SF ballet opening... usually a tragic fashion event that proves just how provincial SF can be sometimes.
I truly believe it takes only a few well dressed gentlemen of some mark to walk into these events often(preferably with two lovely young ladies - a blonde and a brunette) and men's dress will eventually change for the better.
Others will follow your lead...
I think the suit on the left can be saved. Shorter sleeves shorter pants. Mint green wider tie, white square, and brown shoes.
Thoughts?
The lady is Marissa Mayer of Google. She's quite the stylish icon in Silicon Valley.
