The Light Gray Suit

Summertime, and if the living isn't exactly easy I take heart because it's the time light gray suits come into their own. Whether it's a dove gray solid or a black and white houndstooth that looks solid from a distance, light gray is my suit color for the season.

Just as charcoal complements winter's wet pavement, light gray is at home on sun-kissed sidewalks. Try it with a bit of mohair mixed in and you've a suit that travels without complaint, resisting wrinkles all day and into the evening.

Like the gentleman in the illustration, I like to pair light gray suits with pale blue shirts, a dark necktie - the black silk knit is a personal favorite, suede shoes and a light gray hat.

Just looked into some beautiful sharkskin, not quite dove, but very pale and becoming. I'm with you.

Bought one last Summer and is indeed one of my favorites. I get lots of compliments on it. This year I am in the market for a tan suit (or a tan odd jacket with flapless patch pockets.) Paul Stuart has one of each and I'm just deciding which one I'll wear more.

I’m fond of light gray suits too, Will. Once had a CTM I used for quite awhile make a peak lapel 2-button with side vents from Scabal black and white sharkskin. Nice suit. But I’m afraid I don’t like mohair blends, they’re warmer on me. They certainly do have the virtues of reducing wrinkling, and they wear very well though.

I love light grey suits. They're perfect for warm weather. I have three, one Oxxford and two from Brooks Brothers. Just bought a 3-button sack suit in light grey sharksin from the Brethren. It's a wonderful colour, very distinctive, but I worry about stains (from spilled wine, or caviar) showing up.

Will,

Living in the Bay Area I find it difficult to separate seasons by calendar rather than weather. I'm happy to wear light grey in sunny warm December and charcoal during the cold rainy days of July...

Along the same lines as what Trad is saying, I am thinking of breaking out my light gray suit for the first time this year on Thursday night where I will be attending a charity event at the 79th Street Boat Basin. I am worried however that the outdoor event will offer more chances for it to get dirty. But we shall see. If I wear it I am going to pair it with a new sky blue striped shirt from Hemrajani and a navy tie with sky blue stripe from Ralph Lauren. My suit is a 2 button/side vented/ticket pocket Ralph Lauren.

I love light grey suits too, but tasting wine this week in the south of Spain while wearing a light grey Minnis fresco has proved to be problematic, as I had red wine spilled on me three times, and it's impossible to hide. Fortunately it cleaned up well -- I cared much more about the suit than about the wine.

Interesting you mention a suede shoe as I have been told (potentially incorrectly) that a suede shoe is not s spring/summer shoe that it is reserved for the fall to winter season. Any thoughts on this potential misconception. I do live in Atlanta, where the rules (or supposed rules) can be a little off from the rest of the world.

Jose, the Bay area I live in has cold days in July but few rainy ones. :-)

Jonny, white and tan bucks are suede shoes worn in summer even in Atlanta. Unlined suede actually makes a nice hot weather shoe as it seems to breathe a bit better than calf.

Good point on the white and brown bucks and I don't know why I didn't think of it (I am one of a dying bread of white buck wearers).

vicoI was so inspired by this post yesterday that I got out pretty much the described outfitto wear, including pale blue shirt....in my case, midnight navy tie with thin bright stripes. Fortunately Boston weather will cooperate , mid-seventies today.
