I've always been hesitant to wear silk pocket squares in the city, preferring the greater discretion of linen. But lately I've been experimenting with squares whose background color is similar to that of my jacket.
In the photo, which we had to shoot several times as yesterday's intense light kept washing out the colors, a navy square provides a bit of sheen against the matte of a navy suit. Not quite as discreet as white linen but not loud either.
Worn with a lavender shirt and a gray grenadine necktie.

Very sharp, Will. As a fellow reader pointed out a while back, I like the way you fold your squares.
This is one of the more extreme cutaways I've seen you wear. Is it a shirtmaker's stock pattern or a custom job? (And does it just look dramatic because of the different line of a double-breasted, perhaps?)
The collar is the shirtmaker's regular version of a cutaway, which I like to wear with DBs.
why don't you like to wear silk PS' in the city? I usually wear linen squares on warmer days with a odd jacket and tie. I usually will wear a silk square under normal business conditions or in the evening unless I wear a white square which will usually be linen or cotton. Tonyp
Will, as John stated, I do like the way you are folding your squares. I just pulled mine out and folded it, as well. Thanks for the inspiration.
Will,
I was wondering the same as Tonyp. In Flusser's books, he shows a blue DB pinstripe suit with a blue and white polka dot square and the look strikes me as a perfect look for the Knickerbocker Club, University Club, Yale Club or any of the other fine NYC establishments. I usually wear a white linen square (Purple Label) but when I wear one of my silk polka dots - the girls always comment positively. I think it's fine if you do it as you have done it here. I have seen silk squares in the city that are bright or put in the pocket in a big mess. Those, I agree, are distracting.
I don't wear a lot of silk squares in the city as I don't want to look like an art dealer. Nothing wrong with art dealers mind you, but that look is a bit over the top for my life.
With tweed and linen, on the other hand, I'm usually wearing silk.
Will, I really like the lavender shirt...it's almost white, but just that bit of hue to make it interesting.
What other color PS or ties did you think about before choosing these to go with the shirt?
CG, the suit, shirt and necktie are darker in normal light.
I combine the shirt with navy most of the time. And I wear with a gray and rose necktie once in a while.
Thank you for answering my earlier query about matted fabrics.
You criticized Al Pacino's ensemble in Ocean's 13 for being over the top. And you've mentioned pairing pocket squares and ties before.
So far, I've only been wearing linen pocket squares and and matted silk ties. I want to make sure I understand: it is OK to pair silk ties and silk squares so long as one has a rougher texture and the other a shinier texture? Thus, a shiny silk square is OK with my tie--but not usually when in the city on business, but when in the country, which also usually on weekends or holidays,?
A lined 6 fold I assume...
The scale of everything is perfect, awesome look.
Jeffrey this is not rocket science. Try out a few different things in front of the mirror and walk out the door...If people laugh try again. Or if thats the reaction your going for, keep on trucking. Don't think about it so much because you will look like you are trying to hard, which is worse than breaking the rules.
A quick question about mixing fabrics. Is it incorrect to wear a wool suit with a Linen shirt?
Wool and linen incorrect together? I hope not as I combine them frequently in summer.
