The summer combination of dark trousers and a light-colored jacket works best when the trousers' color or a close substitute is repeated above the waist to pull viewers' eyes up to the face.
Here, a vertical line is created floor to shoulders by navy trousers complemented by a navy vest and a knit necktie. Linen jacket, light-weight worsted vest and trousers, and brown striped club collar shirt worn with tan Edward Green bluchers.

You look sharp, but the picture isn't. Too bad for a texture freak like me.
Will: Are you wearing the vest for warmth or for a particular look. I always find that a linen coat and a vest seem to be contra- indicated unless you are trying to create some formality. Also the vest and tie being of the same color doesn't have enough of a pop for me. What about a different/lighter shade of blue?
Great look, Will. I always enjoy seeing different options for navy trousers as I tend to wear them frequently. In fact, I'm wearing them now. And I like your shirt. I have always found that a striped shirt helps break up the "heaviness" of a solid navy trouser.
Dressing for San Francisco is all about layering. I wear vests for cool mornings and evenings and remove them if the day heats up.
If the necktie was a lighter color the combination wouldn't work without the vest in my opinion. But then, I'm not big on pop.
The entire batch of photos from this session suffered from being taken in the evening and the detail is not what we usually strive for. Live and learn.
Wow, this is almost scary -- why? Because today I was imagining wearing my cream sport coat with dark trousers and matching the trouser color in my pocket square. Very nice!
Looks great, but looks a tad warm for summer.
Is that a pinned club collar?
Richard it's mid-fifties (f) on the Pacific coast in the mornings these days.
And yes, it is a pinned club collar.
For those of us on The Continent:
"mid-fifties (f)" is about 13 to 14 degrees Centigrade (Celsius, if you prefer).
The jacket is several shades too light colored for the navy trousers. If that is the only choice for the jacket, it should be paired with a medium blue trouser set.
The navy trousers would match much better with a somewhat darker toned jacket, or maybe something such as the grey color scheme of the POW plaid.
High contrast is not a Plus. However, the shoe selection would work well in any case.
