Fallan & Harvey Fitting

My first scheduled stop in London was at tailors Fallan & Harvey for the initial fitting of a new suit. Naturally, the humidity must have been 99% - perfect for trying on a 15 ounce flannel. Which is why I'm sweating. And the neckerchief is the residual of the clothes I wore on the plane just a few hours earlier.

It used to be said that the mark of a well-dressed man was that he could look good in bold plaids. That made me willing to try this cloth, one of the early London Lounge Cloth Club projects, but I'd been a bit nervous about how bold it would be in reality. Indeed, a friend's tailor was so concerned with the pattern that he suggested my friend's suit be made with the cloth reversed, which tones it down a bit. But I don't have to worry about what someone in the next office might think and I was happy with it made, as it was, into a three button roll 2.5 jacket with a double breasted vest. The vest should have a shawl collar when I see it next in the Fall.

So, worn without the vest it will stand out a little but no more than any overchecked cloth. Worn with the vest it should be striking.

Lovely suit, Will. Love it. Very nice. I'm a sucker for plaid suits. Fifteen ounces is a bit thick for the climate here though. What colour/pattern tie would you wear with it?

I like the cloth a lot, Will. It's not too bold, in my opinion. Quite nice.

Lovely cloth! And very nicely cut, I must say! (Notice how the pattern of the vest matches exactly the pattern of the trousers!)
And it is not bold, I find the effect rather soothing!

I think that’s a beautiful and distinctive fabric, and I like the choice of 3/2.5 with a db vest. It looks as if it would be the perfect suit for all less formal day events and any sporting venue. Very versatile, though perhaps not for particularly formal business meetings, or dark suit evenings.

You seem to get the best out of your tailors, and I think that’s difficult talent to perfect. Please post photos when you wear the finished suit, if it looks that good basted, I have to see the finished garment.

Hard to predict neckties until I have the suit but a solid navy grenadine or oxford for certain. Perhaps black satin as well.

It looks like a beautiful suit, and I think it will work well in a city like San Francisco.

But, my God, the next fitting is next Fall?! Are they really that slow?

I know good things take time, but I think I would go crazy waiting...

We'll definitely have to compare suits when they're done. I'm still waffling over reversing the cloth, especially after seeing yours.

Hello Will,

that's a wonderful flannel and already a beautiful cut suit. In no way it is too bold. I especially love the idea of the DB vest with this suit.

But I have one question: why is the right end of the vest's left part attached? It is very pronounced in the picture because of the flash, but I would like to hear more about the reasons.

Peter, it's a double breasted vest that will have six buttons, three on a side, in that extension area.

A most beautiful suiting, indeed, but what gets my envy-meter all the way up is the boldness of a DB shawl collar vest!

My four yards are sitting in an industrial sized ziplock bag in my closet waiting for me to find a tailor I trust to handle it. Your suit is going to be spectacular
