Robert Talbott in Carmel

Robert Talbott started as a Carmel, California tiemaker in 1950 and has grown to become perhaps the pre-eminent American supplier of neckties. The company operates a retail store in Carmel, where it offers a selection of four in hand and bow ties, pocket squares, RTW and made to measure shirts, socks, and accessories for black tie.

I've never been a fan of Talbott's neckties but I can usually find pocket squares and bow ties that I like. And I was suprised to see a sock design that I admired on Pantherella's home page last year. I couldn't find it anywhere in the United States but there it was on the shelves with Talbott's label. Perhaps they bought the entire run.

Worth a visit if you're in the area. Carmel itself, of course, is worth a trip no matter where you are.

Great post, Will. You look like a kid in a candy store! I have a few Talbott ties. Recently I tried to buy a Talbott madras shirt and ribbon belt from a local haberdashery. Both items were out of stock.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Carmel, Robert Talbot’s shop is very handsome, as is their merchandise.

Will, a word about your hat; it appears to be straw (I know, straw isn’t.) and a form of porkpie. It’s very handsome hat, and flattering. I’d always hated this style, as it was the fashionable style as I was growing up but very unflattering for me. This is the second version of a porkpie I recall seeing in your blog, the other being a greenish felt. At the risk of being obsequious, you seem to have derived a version that is especially suitable to yourself!

Ah Carmel... well beyond simply Talbott's

Agree on the neckties, although often enough it is easier to find nice socks and linen squares than ties

Tim, I believe that Will is sporting a Monte Carlo Panama Hat; just like Mr. Gable once did.

At the risk of mentioning something that you are all quite aware of, Makins makes amazing hats in that style--I stumbled across mine in Nordstoms on a fluke, and yesterday saw them on sale at NM, but you can special order special sizes or any style in production through Nordstroms, full line is at the co. website.
I found your blog researching Creed, trying to find Vintage Tabarome for my husband, I'm thinking it isn't made anymore? I bought him a bottle of Imperial Millesseme (sorry for misspellings), and although he liked it, he thought it would be better on me. :( Anyway, curious about your thoughts- I'm looking for a summer scent for him, I love Jo Malone 154 on him (he does too), but he's ready for a summer change. Any ideas welcome!
Cheers,
Adrienne
p.s. We honeymooned in Carmel after our wedding at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove and then stayed at the Post Ranch-and the Monterey Plaza *sigh*
p.p.s. Laguna Trad, any ideas on hotels for the POM besides the Montage? :)

Adrienne, Vintage Tabarome is available directly from Creed only in larger quantities. I recommend buying it decanted from a source such as theperfumedcourt.com.
