Suits and Socks, Installment X

Following the "socks and trousers should be similar in color" rule the other day, navy and light blue cotton houndstooth socks accompanied a mohair suit and my favorite tan cap toe oxfords.

Mohair and wool suits come into their own wherever the climate is warm, sunny and breezy. Mohair resists wrinkling more than lightweight worsted wool, sunshine complements its slight sheen, and the open weave means the suit wears cool.

Not to contradict the rule on a whim, but I mostly prefer the socks to pick up a color from the tie or the pocket square. Dressing mostly conservatively, I use these three elements to add flair (some might say rebellion).

(I'm not alone: I noticed this approach in some old movies, notably Bing Crosby's in the pool scene in High Society and the bright red socks of Fred Astaire in the clotheshorse reharsal dance in Royal Wedding.)

Will, are those Edward Greens? If so, what is the name of the leather color? I'm putting in an order for a pair and have just about decided on the Edwardian Antique but am thinking that I'd prefer something just a little lighter.

Navy and light blue houndstooth socks? What color are your pants? My monitor must really be bad. Both pants and socks look light gray.

Evan, they are acorn, which is the next shade lighter than Edwardian.

Jeffrey, check the color calibration on your monitor. The flash tends to lighten things but both trousers and socks are a grayed blue on my display and a darker version of the same in real life.

Perhaps it's just me, but the socks and trousers look too alike in this photo, to me. Love the shoes though.

Excellent colors for summer wear. A couple of questions: do you know of any makers of RTW (ready-to-wear) suits in the mohair blend? I just think its harder for most of us to justify the extra expenditure for bespoke on summer suits. What color polish do you apply to shoes that light in tone? It is difficult to keep them from darkening over time. Thanks!
