Travel Day Today

Today was a travel day. I took the overnight flight from San Francisco to London for some fittings and after I got to my hotel started to change only to find I'd forgotten to pack any socks. So, still in cords and an odd jacket, off I went to Turnbull & Asser for some hose.

T&A offers a rainbow of solid-colored socks in both cashmere and cotton, but no patterns. Patterned socks are generally all I wear, but what's a man to do when all he's got is the pair of orange herringbone hose with green accents that's already on his feet? So I emerged with a pair of charcoal and a pair of light blue cotton.

Since I was just a block away I made my scheduled stop at Fallan & Harvey, still in the clothes I'd spent the night in. Tomorrow I'll post photos of the flannel suit that was the object of that visit, but I did also pick up the gun club odd jacket that Peter Harvey's been holding for me.

Back to the hotel for tea. I'm starving.

Your check jacket looks to have turned out very nicely. The photo of the TA wall of socks is fun too. Hope both your visit, and whatever you return with are very enjoyable.

Great post, Will. Enjoy yourself in London. I had to suppress a chuckle, though, when I read about your visit to T&A for the hose you had forgotten to bring with you. 'Accidentally on purpose,' eh? ;) Can we expect a London report from you?

I like the plaid jacket that you show in the picture. Since you indicate that it is a gun coat, I am assuming that the pockets serve a special purpose as they are curved. is this for putting shells in to pockets or is it just a design.

Tony, the jacket is a gun club, which is the pattern. The curved pockets were a feature of some jackets worn by John F. Kennedy and the Duke of Windsor so I thought I'd try them.

I am a little uninformed when it comes to patterns. I have never seen pockets shaped like that. That is certainly a custom order as I am sure that no OTR store would carry them for fear tht no one would buy them unless they had some knowledge or history of the design. Love to see it in person sometime.

The T&A in NYC has a nice selection of colorful socks but not nearly as large as the one in London I notice. Have a nice visit.

Will,

If you are still looking for patterned socks, you might want to stop into Cordings on Picadilly. When I was there a few months ago there was a beautiful Polish woman working the front counter who helped me pick out a few pairs.

Your day sounded almost perfect to me. Especially the tea. That would have really hit the spot for me this afternoon. And the sock shopping, I really would have enjoyed that too. A simple joy. You're a lucky man.

Dear Will,

Years ago I found some very nice patterned cotton socks at Budd, also not too far from T&A in Piccadilly (I believe) Arcade. Perhaps another place for you to try.
