When a white shirt collar and cuffs come to mind, they most often accompany a blue shirt body. That's not, however, the best use of a white collar.
In the photo, musician Charlie Watts wears white collar and cuffs with an aggressively striped shirt body. The plain collar is the reason the shirt pattern works in this context, as it often is with dark and strongly patterned shirts. With a self collar, that shirt would mate with solid suitings and not much else.
The next time you're considering a large tape stripe, a large check or an unusually dark shirt fabric, have it made with a white collar and cuffs. The shirt will be wearable in many more combinations than the same shirt with a self collar.

Charlie Watts! One of the best-dressed rock stars ever. I wish his influence would rub off on the rest of the Stones.
Oh I know, I know..Charlie and his style..exquisite..yet..maybe just maybe he occasionally might like to dress a la Keith...and Keith..I wonder if he's ever thought..'Crumbs, wonder what it would be like wearing Charlie's gear!' ..ok another maybe ..that Keith wouldn't use 'crumbs':-)
another I know..'bout Charlie..'n his style
Charlie and Bryan Ferry seem to be carrying all the load now that Robert Palmer has left us.
Still, I can't help but wink and laugh along with Kieth. I do believe he has a wry and self-deprecating sense of humor, which makes him redeemable in my book.
Once had a shirt almost just like Charlie's. Liked it with my silver SB peak lapel sharkskin and a maroon grenadine tie and white linen pocket handkerchief.
Even better than shirts with white collars, are of course, shirts with detachable collars. Then you can choose when to use a self or a white collar!
Surprisingly few men uses shirts with detachable collars...
