Dress Up for Spring
Summer isn't even over but spring has been in the industry's thoughts thanks to Fashion Week in New York. And Ralph Lauren reminds us of a great idea in his Purple Label collection for next year. Yes Johnny, that's a cream-colored, double breasted shawl collared dinner jacket in tropical weight wool with four buttons, self-lapels, and besom pockets.
Personally, I prefer linen over wool, but the onset of fall is a great month to order one for delivery before spring (or a winter cruise for that matter). And if semi-formal affairs are scarce there's no reason not to wear it to dinner at a white tablecloth restaurant.

Will: any comments about BB's new oxford cloth formal shirts?
I haven't been in the store for a couple of years so haven't seen them, however unless it's a buttondown gag item oxford cloth would be totally wrong for dress shirts. Too coarse and too heavy.
Two comments:
Can you really advocate linen of all things for formalwear? Admittedly, Britain is cooler than some places in America, but the principle must surely still stand.
Secondly, I notice a decidedly uncouth lack of waist covering in your photograph, as well a pleated front combined with (non-stiff) Edwardian collar, not to mention the bottom button visible under the last stud. This picture is not up to your usual standards of elegance.
What principle is that Nicholas? I prefer cream linen over wool for semi-formal evenings in summer, as did many of the best dressed men in America. It doesn't typically apply to English men, who used to wear cream jackets only in the Caribbean. If then.
You are absolutely correct about the waist and shirt of course. I should have taken the time to make the same points you did.
Will, what are your thoughts around pleated formal trousers? Flusser seems to think that they are completely inappropriate (if I remember my reading correctly). I like them. What do you think?
I don't believe Flusser wrote that, but I am not where I can look. All my evening trousers are pleated.
For that matter, all my trousers are pleated.
:-)

I believe Mr. Tierney is referring to Flusser's comments regarding trouser turn-ups.
It's interesting that RL has brought back this item. I dimly recall a very similar RL jacket profiled in the late and lamented M Magazine 25 years ago under the heading: "For Palm Beach rakes."
That all said, I have one such jacket in linen (peak, rather than shawl) and another in shantung silk (single, rather than double, breasted) and living in Miami, they get no little use, especially since rather often a semi-formal event will prominently feature much time out of doors.
Just one man's opinion.

Lovely...how about one in DB?
It's a db jacket...no waist covering necessary
