The Knock-About Suit

I'm not a fan of cotton suits, since they don't last nearly as long as their wool or linen relations and cost every bit as much to tailor even though the fabric costs less. But they offer good value for summer knockabout suits, which is what I was doing with the one in the photo.

With the suit is an almost-but-not-quite-sport shirt worn with a casual necktie. The pairing isn't seen often, and that makes it an effective "going to a gallery this afternoon" combination in my opinion.

Or, in this case, a "been to the gallery this afternoon" combination. Ill-fitting and soon to be retired Luciano Barbera cotton suit worn with a navy knit necktie, navy pocket square with white dots, a blue, white and tan checked shirt, suede belt and saddle shoes.

Is it appropriate to wear linen or cotton suits after Labor Day; does that rule only apply to white and sears sucker?

thank you

Nice shoes!

Whose, please?

Great shirt, Will. I wish more people "knocked about" in a suit and handkerchief and tie. It would be a much more pleasant place.

reborn dump: I retired my seersucker jacket for the rest of the year. I still see people in NYC wearing them and they don't really look out of place. But by October.......

Tim, they are Edward Green made to order.

I always thought the tan cotton was specifically not covered by the Labor Day rule, making it an appropriate choice for warm pre-Memorial Day and post-Labor Day wear.

I hate the Labor Day rule and choose to ignore it. It was 99 degrees yesterday in Southern California. It was also 96 last week before Labor Day. I will wear what the weather dictates.

The only Labor Day rules I'm familiar with have to do with white. There's nothing about cotton or linen. See my post of today.

Thank you. I'm fond of saddle shoes and snuff suede, and this is a very appealing combination.

Perhaps you might consider featuring them and some of your other more out-of-the-ordianry footwear in a future article.

I really like the shirt. Is this the same suit that you previously mentioned the fit of the collar to be troublesome? It looks good although the body of the jacket is a bit long.

Youngin, you have quite a memory. Neither the jacket length or the collar will ever be right on that suit, and its replacement will be in the rotation by spring.

A failed experiment that I've worn perhaps six times.

I can't point to it in print anywhere, it may just be spoken tradition, but I didn't just make it up: No white pants or shoes, no seersucker, no madras, and no linen after Labor Day. Curiously, I've never heard that said about white dinner jackets. Never heard any restrictions of any kind about non-white or non-madras cotton. I have some long-sleeve linen shirts in dark Black-Watch-esque patterns that I will sometimes cheat and use in place of flannel plaids if I know I'm going somewhere where there's good heating or a fireplace.
