Men who haunt the cloth merchant sites probably already know that J&J Minnis is discontinuing its Rangoon book of conservatively designed lightweight worsteds. The book includes the usual solids, stripes and glen checks (unfortunately, the photos are much darker than the cloth is in reality).
For those who don't already know, the remaining stock is available for the bargain price of £16 per metre (about $30) ex VAT, or £64 for a typical jacket and trousers length ($120), plus shipping. That's a 70% discount from the former price.
Rangoon is a plain weave tropical weight (8-9 ounces) cloth. I'm not much of a summer worsted fan but most wardrobes should have at least one and, in the opinion of many, Rangoon is as good as the stuff gets.
Order it while you can.

Many thanks for the heads up Will! I have just placed an order for 15m of the stuff and I am looking forward to a couple of new suits of incredible value.
Ben
Will: By what rough percentage will purchasing the cloth from a supplier reduce expense with your tailor? In addition, you imply that four meters of cloth is satisfactory for an average man. Would five meters be enough if one wants to include a vest? As always, thanks a bunch for your great work. KBS
Thank you Will,
I just purchased 36mt for myself (two suits and one sports jacket) and two friends that I brought along for the ride.
Great tip.
Carl
Kenneth, add half a meter for a vest. If there's a strong pattern that requires matching, add another half meter, and add 1.5 meters for an extra pair of trousers.
There's no consistent cloth pricing from tailor to tailor, and many tailors don't offer bespoke quality cloth of this price level to begin with.
Thanks Will. I am relatively new to bespoke. Any ideas on the kind of lining to use with cloth like this? Have you seen the blue with white pin dots in person? What did you think?
I have four meters of the blue with pindots and my suit will be quarter lined.
Hello,
did anyone else get hit with a 25% customs charge?
Does anyone know the protest procedure?
Minnis labeled the fabric: Imported worsted wool fabric with average fiber diameters of 18.5 micron suitable for use in making men's and boy's suits, suit-type jackets, or trousers.
These fabrics qualify for admission duty free under HTC 5112.
Cheers,
Carl
majtjkingkong - I got hit with the 25% customs duty by UPS also. Still, even with the duty this was a solid deal. Thanks Will.
Ethan
Since UPS is charging duty on cloth that is supposed to be expemt there's probably a nice class action suit waiting for an attorney who'd like to invest some time.
And remember, Minnis is happy to send Royal Mail and there's no duty or UPS 'processing fee' charged that way.
Will,
I asked Emma of Minnis two months ago, she said they won't ship cloth by Royal Mail.
UPS doesn't charge me any duty, since HK basically is a duty free city.
The Airborne is selling 17/m w/VAT online also.
Fishball, Emma is the person who sends my orders by Royal Mail. Perhaps the service to Hong Kong is somehow problematic.
In any case, you're not bothered by duty so there's no point.
FYI for everyone, I contacted UPS and explained that my purchase was marked as duty free and should not have been taxed. UPS said they would look into the matter and contact me tomorrow. Hopefully I can recover most of the duty, if not the UPS handling fee.
I will be sure and try Royal Mail in the future.
Ethan
