Try Checked Trousers

Photo: Rudolf Beaufays

Men probably wear solid or melange-colored trousers with odd jackets 99% of the time, and in doing so overlook the opportunity to mix things up a bit in a classic British way. By that I mean tweed trousers, like the ones in the photo from Rudolf Beaufays, a second-hand and vintage clothing establishment in Hamburg, Germany that I can't recommend too highly (the man has timeless taste).

As the photo shows, it's hardly necessary to only pair patterned trousers with navy blazers or gray cardigan sweaters, the safe choices that come first to mind. So long as the patterns are of a different scale, any combination of jacket and trousers that won't scare off the birds is perfectly appropriate for attendance at a casual outing like an American football game.

Next time you're looking to wear something a little different this fall, try checked trousers.

Will; I love the herring bone coat. Is that a sport jacket or some kind of overcoat. The pants look very full if in fact those are the pants. He has alot of layers going on there. I doubt I would ever have the need to put on that many layers of clothing.

Your adherence to clothing "that won't scare off the birds" is hereby noted by Hitchcock fans.

I think the multiple layers actually help to pull this together. If it were just the herringbone jacket and trousers, it would look pretty bland, despite the bold patterns on both items -- the similarity of the beige tones would make it look a bit washed out. The waistcoat, scarf and Barbour jacket with its green exterior and check lining are what make the whole outfit really work.

I was in Rudolf Beaufays' shop a couple of weeks ago. I mentioned it, along with another Hamburg clothing institution, on my own blog - I hope you don't mind me posting a link: manofmode.blogspot.com

The picture you post is really intriguing. Imagine yourself just throwing on something like? I find it captivating.

After looking at Beaufay's site I am now planning a trip to Hamburg,(a beautiful train ride perhaps?) brushing up on my German, and emptying my bank account. Despite the savings, I fear personal economic tragedy looming....

Looks great. I wouldn't have thought so without the photograph, but I really like it.

The fabric of the trousers is simply not on offer today in the off the rack market. I suspect that it would be hard to track down even for a made to order trouser. Men today are not found wearing this arrangement as they could not find it available if they wanted to dress in tht style.

That is a very handsome vest, BTW. The suede appears to have a great finish.

A healthy dose of pattern and texture mixing is good medicine for the fall.

As is the Barbour-jacket-over-sportcoat effect. Especially on a damp day with grass rather than pavement under the feet.

Will,

Does Rudolf have an email address? Hamburg is a bit far from Australia.

Thanks and regards,

Peter
