Wear Fresh Pajamas

Photo: Luciano Barbera

A fresh pair of pajamas is one of the great pleasures of life. If he can afford only one luxury, a man should consider choosing eight or more pair of linen or cotton poplin pajamas so he can don a clean pair each night of the week.

There are silk pajamas of course, but silk wears warm and is not as easy to care for. Reserve it for dressing gowns where odd spots of orange marmalade can be removed with a stain removal product (New York's Madame Paulette offers a good but somewhat pricey one, much like that firm's services generally).

I was once of the opinion that pajamas should be made to measure but I'm no longer so dogmatic. If a man fits relatively well into one of the ready to wear sizes, who is to know? Even the the rest of his household is likely to be too sleepy to notice.

Other than cleanliness, all that's important is that the things are neatly mended, colored conservatively so as not to frighten small children and that the waist elastic does not require constant attention to prevent it from losing its grip. Even ironing is optional.

Wear fresh pajamas.

Great post, thanks. I've been acquiring quite a few lately. Recently discovered this pleasure. Warm climes almost force you to sleep in the buff. As you age, however, and your house grows, you have to cover up for modesty and chills. Elegant pajamas and a wool robe in the early morning make you day. Make sweats and tee shirts for bed a thing of the past.

Besides, Dolce & Gabbana just came out with a line of women's wear based on men's pajamas claiming that nothing looks sexier on a woman than wearing her man's PJs. How right they are...

Will,

Can you please give me a comfort argument in favor of pajamas? I ask because I'd love to start wearing them, but I can't bring myself to do it. I always dress nicely in public, and at home I wear velvet Albert slippers and even a dressing gown or robe in winter. But I still lounge around the house and sleep in sweats and a t-shirt because I find them more comfortable; for one thing, I hate how a pajama shirt tends to twist around my torso when I turn over in bed, a phenomenon I also experience, but to a lesser degree, with pajama pants around my legs. Those flaws seem inherent in the design of pajamas, regardless of fit.

Thanks!

Never wear pajamas. Boxer shorts by etro and a soft cotton T in sthe summer. and some soft cotton bottoms from J. Crew in the winter.

Mark, I don't know. To the extent that I've been buying ready to wear pajamas they've been Derek Rose Collection from Derek Rose for some years.

I have no current information on other brands except the Derek Rose Savile Row Collection which isn't right for me.

Johnny, if your pajamas are twisting on you during the night you may be wearing the wrong size. Mine don't do that.

I much prefer drawstring to elastic waistbands. Nordstrom's and Brooks both make good pajamas.
