Cream Colored Trousers

Photo: Ralph Lauren

Hardy Amies, the late menswear designer from whom I have borrowed quite a bit (with no intention of returning any of it), once wrote about white linen trousers that "there is nothing more comfortable to wear or pleasant to see than these." I think that thought extends equally to cream colored wool trousers, whether venetian, gabardine or flannel, and this year Ralph Lauren is on the same page, with quite a few cream trousers in his spring 2009 collection.

Wool trousers generally are classified as cream rather than white as the oil in the wool inclines them towards that shade over time whether we want that or not. I like them for the sunny days of late spring and early fall (winter white is a different story that we are not telling today). Pair them with blue odd jackets of course, either the Tom Wolfian version in the photo or more mainstream offerings. They also work well with lightweight tweeds that have some white in the weave.

Excellent! I take it these are restricted to the memorial day - labor day period due to the color or because they are wool can they be worn later (or earlier)?

I wear them as long as the temperature is in the 60's (F) and the sun shining.

I'm curious - what makes this jacket 'Tom Wolfian' in your opinion?

Wolf's blue blazer was the first time I'd noticed this button configuration on a jacket.

Would you suggest linen or other open-weave trousers be fully lined to avoid the dreaded lining shadow? Or would a sufficient weight make them opaque.

I really like this idea. The cream color is more versatile than some starker whites or darker browns. I like them with nearly any shade of brown, as well as the navy you mentioned.

William, my cream trousers are lined. Without it, even 14 ounce linen, for example, leaves nothing hidden when back lit.

No, the only thing restricted to the Memorial Day to Labor Day period is the pure stark white. Cream and other light tans (including winter white) are perfect for spring and fall.rcaftvgx
