Visiting Season Is Underway

Photo: A Suitable Wardrobe

Visiting season began in late September when George Cleverley came to town, and there'll be one or more tailors or cordwainers making their semi-annual appearance in San Francisco every week during October.

The first visit that had an impact on my own wardrobe was that of Peter Harvey last week. Peter is a lovely fellow and the remaining partner of Fallan & Harvey, my not-quite Savile Row tailors located a block over on London's Sackville Street. They're so low profile they don't even have a web site.

I met Peter this time in the company of Jeff von Spangenberg, who I am pleased to write will be endeavoring to improve the quality of the photos in some of these essays, beginning with the ones in this post.

The fourth member of our party was the blue flannel suit that was Peter's perfectly executed spring commission. The cloth is a 14 ounce flannel from Fox Flannel that was the first, or one of them, London Lounge Cloth Club offering. It's made up as a three button jacket with the lapels rolling to 2.5 and a double breasted vest with shawl lapels.

The strong pattern poses some challenges for wear and I'll have more to say about about those tomorrow.

Will,

Nice looking photos - but it doesn't appear that they can be enlarged like your others.

I know what you mean about challenging suits. I have a somewhat bold gray pinstripe suit that I just can't get right in the accessories department. Now I don't feel so bad.

Very nice photos, thanks Will! Your Eden in Paris fabric suit looks splendid. I'm looking forward to learning experiences with it.

Peter Harvey looks to be a particularly affable gentleman, certainly an asset in his profession.

I've had the same dilemma with this rather wonderful LL cloth. So far, I've worn the trousers and coat as separates only but plan to wear the ensemble together for an imminent trip to toe opera. Look forward to further commentary tomorrow.

The photo enlarging thing is a mystery to me. There's a quirk in Google's photo sfotware somewhere but I don't know what it is.

I just got my LL triple-check 3-piece SBPL from Mahon, and it is a nice cloth with an especially lovely hand. Even done inside out deemphasizing the check design, as mine is, it's a bit country and informal, and seems more like day wear than night. I wore it to a matinee LA Phil concert yesterday, and felt pretty comfortable there.

Shirt was a pale pink broadcloth, tie was a red/blue/yellow repp from J.Crew, PS was a dark maroon silk with tiny white dots, dark blue cotton socks with faint, thin brown stripes, and shoes were chestnut EG Inverness which kind of fit the whole country-fied look.

I think its ground color is closest to Air Force blue, but perhaps a bit grayer and darker. It is a hard color to describe, and seems to change quite a bit with the light.

We should both wear the same suit to lunch! :)

Whatever became of the visiting artisan calendar that you used to compile showing which artisans were visiting various cites and when? I remember, when we exchanged emails last year, you writing that some changes were in the works. What has become of that wonderful resource!?

oh, sorry, the last comment was from me, Kazu Sano. I realize that I got to your blog via my google reader, which is why I was signed in anonymously.
