Discretion

Tom Wolfe and film stars aside, most successful men do not need to attract attention, and that may be why so many of them dress with increasing discretion over the years.

Discretion in dress is not to be confused with drabness. The drably dressed man is seen and immediately forgotton. His well dressed counterpart makes his point with one memorable element that elevates the tone without drawing stares.

In the photo, the late Duke of Windsor is dressed discreetly in a dark suit, white shirt and solid silver necktie. Nonetheless, the observer's eye sees tasseled loafers under the suit, and that makes all the difference.

Will: is it true that the Duke's brother (and tailor) created the jacket style worn in the photo?

Dark suit, white shirt, silver necktie. Exactly what I'm wearing today. Odd these coincidences.

sometimes I think my jacket sleeves are too short and show too much cuff. nice to see the abundance of cuff here in this photo.

Toad, most 6x2 DBs can be buttoned to either button. The Duke's brother did popularize the style, which is especially effective for the shorter man.

Will-

I was always under the impression that the proper shoes with suits were usually lace-ups?

Would it be out of character to wear a single-breasted suit with a pair of black tassels?

Thanks!

The proper shoes usually are lace-ups. And once you know the rules it becomes OK to stretch them.

His pants are so big and baggy. The overall look is rather square or box-like. I mean, why not wear something that complements his physique a little more. Even at his age, he doesn't look bad.

The bowler hat doesn't hurt either.
