Dressing Flannel Down

Photo: LIFE

Flannel suits can be dressed up or down depending on accessories, and a knitted sweater is always less formal than a vest that matches the jacket.

In the LIFE magazine photo from 1955 that was apparently inverted when it was scanned (and thanks to Tony V. who pointed me to the archive), the late Duke of Windsor stands in the garden of his country house wearing a chalk striped flannel suit with a v-necked (and probably armless) sweater, a wool necktie and, further reducing formality, black slip-on shoes.

It's fine to try this one at home.

It appears correct to me. I believe the DoW is wearing a double-breasted, yes?

Thanks for you blog!

The photo is correct now (other than the now-inverted magzinee watermark) as I corrected it.

Yes, he's wearing a DB.

Hello Will,

Great photo. One can't help but notice that there is not a lot of contrast in the clothes or textures.

Can you opine just a bit on this issue of contrast and why it works here or fails in your opinion?

If you had put this together what would you have done differently?

Cheers,

Carl

For me, a blue/navy tie would have been hard to resist and lace-up shoes would have certainly called to me also.

Major, the photo appears to me to have been re-touched. Who knows what colors may have been worn that day.
