The Dress Set

Photo: von Span

More men probably wear black tie on New Year's Eve than on any other night of the year, many of them with dress shirts that require studs to fasten the front. The combination of shirt studs and matching cufflinks, called a dress set, is one of the few kinds of jewelry to have a place in a gentleman's wardrobe.

Unlike cufflinks for day wear, which should not contain bright stones like diamonds, at night a bit of brightness is actually desirable.

The dress set in the photo will be one of the first items offered on the ASW shopping site early next year, along with shoes, cloth for suits and jackets, and neckwear. Made by a firm that has been the official jewelers to the royal families of India since the 18th century, each piece is made of 18 carat gold, black onyx, diamonds and a ruby (an emerald or sapphire can be substituted for the ruby).

Delivery is 14 weeks from the date of order. The cufflinks are $2,300. Four studs are $4,200 (a three stud set for men who wear a waistcoat instead of a cummerbund is $3,150) and the set is either $6,200 with four studs or $5,200 with three studs.

While I'm quite glad to see that an ASW shopping site is coming into existence, it's evident that it will be confined to browsing only until I win the lottery..

Is there a rule for matching metallic wear--that is, gold links and watch, and presumably, if worn, studs?

If this photo is of matching links and studs, then the links are not double-sided. I thought that double-sided links were the rule.

Yes, metal should match. Steel with steel, yellow gold with yellow gold, etc.

The design in the photo would be too heavy if it were double-sided.

I'm sorry but above $25 they should be double-sided. Weight be damned. You went through the trouble of caring past a $150 set from the evil bay the least you could do is get a double-sided link.

IMHO.

As an aside, you might like to read my latest blog: Just today I was accosted by two young girls looking to buy some cufflinks as a present.

They turned to me asked the Question of the Year: excuse me,... "Do Cufflinks come in Different Sizes?".

Aah, to think that I was probably once as young and naive as that (well, nearly, anyway).
