Choosing A Necktie

Yesterday I was looking for a necktie that combines well with this new shirt and a navy jacket, and if I have found one in the photo it is certainly not a conventional pairing.

The shirt is a small yellow-green on white check with an unexpectedly indigo overcheck that I thought was navy when I ordered it from Joe Hemrajani (in a swatch it appears navy until placed next to a navy jacket and then it looks like electric indigo). My thought was that it would be interesting with a blue blazer.

Now my semi-automatic routine for choosing a necktie that pulls a new shirt and a jacket together is to experiment with ties that repeat the secondary shirt color in the ground. Unfortunately, that was not an option as my closets do not hold any neckties with an indigo ground. And dark blues, like a midnight blue satin, looked boring with the jacket.

I went next to the colors of the color wheel. Blue-violet is across from orange-yellow, so that combination has some small justification. But, looking at the result, I may wait until spring when I can wear the shirt with my green natte weave. I love that tie.

I think you nailed this one, Will.

What about using a Purple Tie? I think it would make the indigo in the shirt pop, and stand out from the navy jacket.

Very well done. What collar is that? English Spread or Classic.

Looks good.
Speaking of that Ben Siver tie I recently ordered a burgundy solid from them and it arrived narrower than I like to wear my ties. They told me 3.5 inches wide but it seems to be just narrower than that. I might take it to tiecrafters to have it adjusted. One of the reasons I do not like buying on-line.

Nice. Looks like you're thinking spring already.

I've always liked the knots you get.

It looks splendidly casual, but I guess that this is a result of some effort. I know it depends on the tie (Sam Hober, Drakes just make great knots the first time), but I have favourites that take several tries to get just right. Maddening some mornings actually.

How much do you play around with the knot until you're happy with it?

I like the combo. The Green natte weave may be too similar to the green in that shirt. My computer shows the shirt as having a green or aqua color in it.

Yougin, could be but mine are for summer.

English spread Raymond.

Initials, IMO if a knot doesn't work in the first minute it's never going to work.

Will, you're probably right...I end up playing with the lousy knots all day long...I look silly.

John, tiecrafters? They adjust your ties? What has your experience been? Worth the time, effort and cost? I ask because I have too many cheap ties that are "old friends", but can look awful if they aren't "fixed." Always wondered if it's worth it...

I first learned of TieCrafters while reading Will's blog entry from August 24, 2007. I live here in NYC and had not previously heard of them before reading Will's blog.

I like variety in my ties but tend to lean toward Purple Label ties. The problem with Purple Label ties for me as they are too long. I now take them to TieCrafters to have them shortened to 57 inches or 57.5 inches in some cases.

In the last year and a half, I have probably taken 15 ties there for alteration and they have turned out well. I had some shortened, widened and narrowed. (if they are words?!) They state that they have a minimum order but I have taken single orders there with no problem. It costs between $10-$20 (I forget) and the ties are usually ready in 2 weeks. I prepay and have them messengered to my office.

In terms of worth, I'd say do it if you like the tie. I had some old ties widened thinking I would wear them more but still haven't worn them and may never wear them again. Funny how we waste money sometimes.

Cheers
John

Will,
Beautiful collar . knot and colour combo.
My favorite silk tie has a salamander theme that goes well with pea/hamhock soup that dribbles on my shirt.

Interesting... I called Ben Silver in response to
a Sale notice they sent me by email. I asked
them how wide are their ties. The answer:
3 inches. Too narrow for me. I never buy
below 3.75 inches no matter what is "current".

BTW Will, great tie. How wide is it?

Thanks, John. Know exactly what you mean...I waste far to much money on mere centimeters....

Best, CG
