The glint of a silk scarf worn to fill the vee of a jacket is a very continental look that I'd like to see more often in other parts of the world. Particularly useful when the wearer has an open shirt collar, a length of silk closes the neck while it protects the chest from the chill.
White dots on blue silk is probably the most useful combination, white dots on olive can be interesting and there are a plethora of compatible paisleys. I like to knot my silk like an ascot, which is to say that I tie it like a four in hand but throw the front blade over the knot instead of pulling it through.
This is a look for moderate winter days instead of the Siberian variety as silk isn't as warm as cashmere or wool. Not as warm but better looking. Isn't that one of life's daily trade-offs?
Try the scarf worn continental style.

My goodness, Will, with the red of his collar, I thought that was an American flag draped around his neck at first glance. I wish Southern California weather allowed me to wear a scarf, regularly.
Will,
I wouldn't try this myself, but I do enjoy the look and my particular favorite is Edward Fox's maroon scarf with white dots which he wore in the Day of the Jackal.
As an alternative, I like to wear discreetly dotted handkerchiefs or ties with my Prince of Wales jackets. There is something about the dots and squares that is attractive.
I really love the pattern of the jacket he is wearing. Is there a name for that pattern?
Tony, it looks like a glen check with a light blue overcheck to me.
I find the ascot knot on a scarf a little too symmetrical. With this cold winter in England, I'm wearing a long, woollen scarf. I double it, wrap my neck and pull the loose ends through the loop. I prefer this asymmetric look, but it seems to have become incredibly commonplace. Before it got too cold, I wore a short, maroon silk scarf. Rather than knot it, I preferred to cross the ends across my chest so that it's held in place by my coat.
Will,
Can you recommend some retailers who sell the navy w/white dots silk scarf? Thanks!
Will,
Besides Drakes, where do you sugggest for finding a scarf like the one in thios photo. The one they offer at Drake's has dots in different scales on each side. I'm looking for one with the same size dots on each side.
Thanks,
Nungesser
Thank you so much for this. This look is incredibly sophisiticated. I adore polka dots scarf, hankerchief and ties. I used to collect Tootal polka dots scarf. I love white polka dots on red too. I came across William Hunt sells a lot of polka dots accessories (scarf, tie, hankerchief) like this. I love William Hunt label. They sell typical sloane ranger looking clothes and accessories for men!
Excellent post, Will. This is how I typically wear my scarf, although here in Southern California there are few occasions when one is needed. In the last couple of weeks, however, due to the chilly weather, I have been wearing a keffiyeh that my wife gave me.
Here in the UK we even use them in product photo shoots!

Scarf shown is a Drakes [of course].
