Resort Clothes

Photo: LIFE

The clothes I've seen pushed as resort wear this season are disappointing to say the least. One well-known specialty store's recent selection can be summarized as a couple pair of linen trousers, a couple of square bottomed shirts and a couple of bathing suits. Of course, if the occupancy rates at warm weather resorts this season look anything like that of San Francisco's hotels (where one of the City's well known properties was only 6% full earlier this week), then this post loses much of its already limited relevancy.

With retailers failing to lead the way, Mr. Obama's relaxation of the White House dress code is just another predictor of a further decline in dress at our already casual vacation resorts. On the one hand, perhaps we truly are headed for all workout clothes all the time. On the other, perhaps there's an opportunity for someone to offer holiday packages with bundled appropriate clothing.

Irrespective of these musings, note that the late Duke of Windsor chose spectator shoes and a light gray double breasted for a sunny day in Portugal before the War.

I had a complaint today about the perceived anti-semitism of the Duke of Windsor. This is not the first time. I get complaints from one side or another about virtually every man I use as an example.

I respect these viewpoints however this is a clothing blog. If there is something to be learned about dress from anyone, he is fair game. Politics and religion are not.

Further, I do not publish rude or prejudicial comments from any perspective, even comments I might agree with. Please restrict yourselves to the clothes and feel free to email me under your real name with other concerns.

If you aren't able to use your real name, don't bother writing.

Thanks for reading ASW!

WIll, someday you should write a piece of sociological inquiry into why men, practically around the clock, only wear clothes originally meant purely for factory work, digging ditches, and touch football. What does it mean? Is it an unconscious sense of immanent disaster and guys want to be dressed for it?

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor are examples of impeccable style and elegance, no matter what their politics or private pecadillos (which I've read are quite bizarre). He looks wonderful here, as your post demonstrates, but just look at her in this scene. A tastefully tailored brown day dress accented with a periwinkle blue hat, belt and pin (which echo his shirt and tie). Her handbag and shoes match, though I know that's not supposed to be "done" nowadays. For someone not born to it, she fakes being "royal" pretty well.
Love your blog.

Looks good. Interesting how one can look good even in such a casual context.

You are spot on Will! A real shame about resorts...the office is no longer a place where one dresses well... Where does that leave us? Where can we dress as we please? On vacation...and I'll be damned if anyone stops me from wearing my cream linen suit with panama hat! I just had several ties made for my vacation in the Med. And I'm the look of swim wear has me seriously considering having a heart-to-heart with my tailor about making me some decent swim trunks!

Look forward to your post from your trip.
