The Scarf Worn Braided

Photo: Koenraad De Smedt

Norwegian reader Koenraad De Smedt reminded me that I've been too obsessed with silk scarves to illustrate the warmest way to wear a wool or cashmere version. That's the braided knot, as seen in the photo of Mr. De Smet himself, a symmetrical masterpiece that stays reliably in place.

The difficult to describe braid takes a little practice but once achieved it's easy to remember. Leave the short end of the scarf to dangle on your left side and wrap the long end around your neck. Bring the long end over the short end in front of you and wrap it around your neck a second time. Pass the remains of the long end between the two wraps so that it hangs in front of you.

You may need to experiment until you get the two ends to be approximately the same length.

My wool scarf is 72 inches long, which I believe is standard length. I've been trying over-and-over to follow your instructions, but there's not enough scarf! What am I doing wrong?

Fabulous.

I think there is one step missing perhaps? I had to retuck the short end in order to get the same look.

Yes, I've worn scarves with a clove hitch for some years now. Since the cow hitch became too popular, I've found this variation useful

Very nice indeed. Since its been running close to zero degrees here I should have plenty of opportunity to practice this knot. Thank you

The description "braided" gives a rough visual impression, but ohblast correctly points out that this know is a clove hitch, not a braid. One needs at least 5 feet of scarf to make this work.

That's strange. I'm also norwegian and have been wearing the braided knot the last couple of months... This a norwegian thing or...?

Love this blog! Thanks Will!

Norman of Copenhagen posted a great "how to" video for the braid:

OldSchool - It seems I have the same problem. Perhaps it's because I have a neck like a NFL linebacker? The video below shows a very long scarf! Does anyone know where one that length (it looks like 8+ feet long) might be found?

OldSchool and William, a 72" scarf should tie comfortably. Try the instructions plaidout provided.
