Lifestyle: Snowbound

I find myself stuck in my hotel today following one of Britain's worst snowfalls of the past 18 years overnight. That's not a terrible thing. It means that instead of six hours of driving and a visit to a tweed mill, I spent the day reading an old James Bond novel at Sharrow Bay Country House, a hotel on a lake that's conveniently attached to a one Michelin star restaurant. There's not much to do other than read and walk in the snow, but I am unlikely to go hungry.

I arrived last night after a ten hour flight and four hour car trip ready to practice what I've found to be one of the more reliable ways to adjust to the time change. After a quick shower it was time for cocktails, wine with dinner and cognac afterwards in my room where I slept soundly the night through. And this morning I am adjusted.

If memory serves me right, dinner consisted of foie gras with black pudding, plaice in mushroom sauce, a sorbet, lamb served roasted and braised, and a lemon baked Alaska. I am faced with a similar prospect for this evening (the Stilton souffle looks good) and an early bed time before my drive to London in the morning.

But if there are more travel advisories for tomorrow, I may have to stay over. No sense risking life and limb when the kitchen is this good.

Very picturesque. If you're going to get snowed in, that's not a bad place for it.

In unrelated news, it's a clear warm day in the Bay Area, so much so that some trees in the Marina district and in Golden Gate Park are blooming.

Sorry for the historic weather, but at least your hotel sounds splendid, and you get to see the land in a way few others ever will. Your photos are evocative. Weather for reflection. A change of perspective.

Beautiful pix! Which novel are you reading?

You are fortunate being in Scotland in these times - a country that knows how to deal with such adverse weather conditions. To read how we in London "coped" with the snow (or didn't) pkease read my own blog "State of the Nation - a Rant" on http://www.rayfrenshamworld.blogspot.com - you are indeed, sir, in the best place possible: in a beautiful, warm hotel, being pampered. (They predict the snow will return in force tomorrow. Thursday).

Ah, the trials of travel. One must "make do" as best one can.

Will ,

On a trip like this what ahow did you pack?

Two heavy suits, two pair of dress boots and a lined raincoat were the core items. I wore a tweed jacket and a turtleneck sweater on the flight out, and will wear it again going back.

Actually, as you know Will, you were in the Beautiful Lake District in Cumbria, England.

It's a pity I didn't know you were there, as you're only about a 30 min drive from myself & Tom Mahon (englishcut).

Edwin, I did try to see Thomas but he was off at a sailing course. I regret I didn't realize you are also based there.
