Spring Casual

Notice the man to the left of the Esquire illustration, an exemplar of casual springtime dressing. He's weariing basics: Norwegian slip-on shoes, cotton drill trousers and a medium-weight tweed jacket with a scarf that pulls it all together.

Scarves give the wearer a choice of what to wear beneath them, as tee, polo or dress shirt are just background.

Will, the figure in the tweed jacket has just one button on his cuff. How many buttons do you prefer for an odd jacket? I've gone from four to three and am now considering just two. --Aaron

Single button on the coat sleeve. Is that common? I don't believe I've ever seen that.

There is no standard for odd jacket sleeve buttons. Personally, I like one, two or four buttons depending almost entirely on whim.

The story of the spring weight scarf ends, I am afraid all too often, in fringes; whether it be charmeuse or even pongee. This makes for some little bit of extra frippery one can live without amongst buds and blossoms,it seems to me.

Right now I'm plugging some elderly dusty pastels in extra fine cashmere. Works great in my climate until just before work!

That goes of course for the spring tweeds; and is, of course, one of the chief reasons for owning an open car.

Have a happy vacation!
