Suits Sans Socks

Photo: Ben Baker

A man should properly be channeling an Italian vibe before he wears a summer suit without socks (that is the very Italian Pier Luigi Loro Piana in the foreground of the photo, with his brother and co-CEO Sergio). But when the occasion is right, and any sunny day in the country might do, the combination of a linen suit and slip-on shoes worn sockless is timeless.

Combine the shoes and suit with a knit necktie and an open weave shirt of cotton voile or one of its opaque modern equivalents. Then find a shady spot and relax.

This is great, I highly doubt you have checked out my blog at www.wpdgnewark.blogspot.com, but I have several post about not wearing socks. One from last summer has a photo of a good friend and I at his daughter's wearing with "no socks"

Will-

Sort of on subject. I just picked up a pair of white Gucci horse-bit loafers. I'm debating the possibility of pairing these with a suit, most likely a dark navy or heavy charcoal. I plan to ensure that the shirt/tie/pocket square live up to the shoes.

What's your impression on this? Italian or too "pimp-like"?

Or are these better with light tan slacks and a navy jacket?

Thanks!

Never ever.

Nice dogs though.

Let me see, here. Wearing no socks to expose pasty white leg = ok. Wearing socks too short to expose pasty white leg = not ok. I'm telling you, Will, I think I might need a flowchart.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a cheeky ankle.

That said, as a general rule if your shoe has a goodyear welt a hose is needed seems to stand true.

The hard part is finding a grenadine silk tie without it turning into a mission.

This does look pretty unbalanced - the heavy dark suit highlighting the leg skin, inconsistent at best, or an attempt to attract attention maybe? A light, summery linen suit, as Will said, would be a different kettle of fish, or even a summer sports jacket. But attention it did attract obviously, and some men regard this as an important purpose of their outfits. And willowbend1720: a creative idea, but it sounds a bit "pimp-like" indeed.

Of all the attractive parts of the body to display, the ankle is not one of them. Sockless loafers with linen or seersucker, maybe, but one had best be fit and tan. This is coming from a native Southerner, by the way.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Never.
Only exception: you are a 25 year old model and you're flawless. Otherwise, its just disgusting and everyone's wondering if you smell.

Hi Will, as you know I am deeply Italian and often use loafers without socks during the summer months (the loafers you have from us are perfect for sockless use), preferably when already tanned a bit.

However, frankly, I would never be sockless wearing a suit, moreover if wearing also a tie.

In my opinion it has the same effect as wearing lace ups sockless: unbalanced and inelegant.

Obviously just my two cents but from an Italian perspective.

Ciao. Francesco
