Tropical Resort Wear

On the way to a hotel on Waikiki wearing canvas shoes, Sea Island cotton socks, heavy linen trousers, a white Smedley tee and a linen overshirt to provide pockets.

Needless to say, this trip is about as casual as life gets - but even a relaxed man needs pockets. Wallet, Blackberry, eyeglass and sunglass cases, money clip, handkerchief and business cards each require their place to roost. The linen shirt is unlined ten ounce stuff by Scabal.

Superb casual look. I go for a similar look in summer myself, except I replace the shirt with a safari jacket and am never seen without a cravat.

Speaking of summer, I live in an area of Australia where we routinely reach 105-110 fahrenheit during summer, with little humidity. Even the lightest suit materials seem too heavy, can you offer any advice?

When it's a 105 out, I'm hot in a pool wearing a bathing suit. Will nice look, its nice to see you in rubber soled shoes.

You are overdressed for Hawaii, Maybe not downtown Waikiki, but certainly Maui, or the Big Island. Shorts, no socks, and a linen shirt short sleeves. Who needs business cards unless you are going for business. One eyeglass case for both glasses.

Will, why the choice of canvas shoes? My first and last instinct would be to wear loafers or some other casual shoe (boat shoes for example).

Please, please wear a hat and advise other to do likewise--particularly in a tropical environment. Skin cancer is deadly.

Charles, I think the canvas shoes lower the formality of the ensemble.

And Tony, I am in Waikiki so even by your definition I am not over-dressed. :-)

Nice ensemble. You look both happy and relaxed. However, I really really really agree with Greg: please wear a broad-brimmed straw hat! Too many tourists get horribly sunburned on their first or second day, and spend the rest of their trip in their hotel rooms, writhing in agony and unable to go outside during the day. White skin just isn't made for the tropics.

Tonyp,
"Downtown" and "Waikiki" are two different districts of Honolulu; they are separated by Ala Moana and Kaka'ako. IMHO, Will could go anywhere on Oahu except Downtown or a nice restaurant and not look out of place (except for his lack of tan ;-) For Downtown, he'd really need an aloha shirt and a pair of darkish slacks, along with either loafers or lace-ups (in calf, of course--suede is too casual).

Have a good time! Can you tell us more about the bag?

You need a good cigar to complete the image.

Have fun!
