Where Are They?

A long Hawaiian beach walk in espadrilles last week reminded me how much more practical are the kind with ankle laces to hold them onto the foot, like the ones on the man in the Esquire illustration. But just try and find them without travelling to coastal Spain.

The one source I am aware of is Espadrillesetc.com, which unfortunately has them only in black. Can anyone point me to a pair in cream?

Here in Miami we have several places which import Spanish "stuff" (above and beyond edibles and potables; things such as toiletries, apparel, etc.) and I shall institute inquiries.

Lookes like they have a model called teh Roberto that warap around the ankle: http://www.espadrillesetc.com/view.php?id_generico=00318&search=&secorder=false. Not as open over the vamp as the ones in your Esquire illustration and not in cream. But blue or white has more appeal to me than black.

Will, I live on the North Coast of Spain, and I can assure you that no man here wears espadrilles (also known as "alpargatas")with ankle laces.

They are considered women´s shoes nowdays.

Alpargatas themselves were rarely seen last years.

But it seems that there is a new and very "preppy" trend since some summers ago.

Some new espadrilles models, with a fashionist touch, can now be found in a few and very elitist and conservative men´s shops.

uite nice models, like these:

But if you think you absolutely need ankle subjection you should also consider the traditional "abarcas" from Menorca (one of the Islas Baleares, Spanish islands on the Mediterranean Sea):

Being from Argentina I have used espadrilles (alpargatas, as we say over here) all my life. I have never seen the model that you are looking for but I can make a contribution by saying that the number one mistake of wearing espadrilles is having them too big. They should fit very very thigh the first time you use them. After that, they should feel like socks.
I use them all the time to walk on the sand and no a single grain of sand goes in my feet.

Go with a pair of Toms. At least they support a good cause.

Will, Paul Stuart had cream espadrilles last season. I have a pair. :)

I had some problems with the heels of my espadrilles slipping despite being snug. I solved this problem by using a suede, self-adhesive Dr. Scholl's heel liner.

I found my 'manly' espadrilles from The Times supplement magazine the other Saturday and ordered from http://www.espadrille.co.uk

Big sizes, dark colours and no straps!
