Just the Thing for Fog

Fog the other day and the temperature was perfect for a light weight scarf. This one is worn with a blue tropical weight suit, a light blue shirt and mid-brown shoes.

The scarf is linen in a vintage madras print by Drakes London. The suit is in a discontinued Rangoon fabric that John G. Hardy called a white pin dot. No-one of my acquaintance has ever been able to make out a dot, but it was nice stuff nonetheless.

By the way, any readers in need of a black and white tropical glen check with a red overcheck should consider snapping up one of the three lengths remaining of the Rangoon 0137 at the bargain price of £18.40 per metre. Comparable cloth is easily five times that price. But I digress.

I believe that one of the drivers for the return of summer scarves this year has been that they complement the tieless suit worn Clooney style. But with tie or without, they are just the thing for the fog.

Will-Sign me up for the Rangoon Glen plaid, enough to make a suit. Of course, I will need you to refer me to a proper tailor. TMercer

That is truly lovely combination I think that the blue and the pink play off each other beautifully.

I love wearing scarves in winter but alas, Sunny So. Cal. does not permit the wearing of scarves in Summer. At the beach in the early or late evening may be an exception. Even now with the June Gloom, it is not cold enough unless you are out and about in the wee hours of the morning.

Great look will,

I had that same cloth made into a summer odd jacket by Greenfield. three patch pockets, side vents, 3 rolled to two, sterling buttons, ASH 3/4 lining. I love it.

it is a great change from my Lesser Hopsack winter blazer.

I have the fawn colored Rangoon, a Navy, light Grey and this blazer. It was a great fabric. At roughly 20% of the Lesser tropical, the only reasonable comparison fabric, it was a steal.

Cheers,

Carl

I'm not loving the color combination, but my palette skills are questionable. I like the scarf and suit idea, though.

Beautiful suit, beautiful scarf, but this pairing doesn’t work for me. Though more obvious, I think I would prefer yesterday’s and today’s the other way around. Other than the obvious, if more boring, blue with blue and dusty rose/khaki and olive with a bit of blue with your tan jacket, I find two things slightly as I might not prefer them: First the feel of the outfits might be better with the more rustic appearing linen with the more casual ensemble, and the slightly less rustic blue scarf and the more formal suit. Secondly, the mass of this scarf tends to throw the balance off of the formally cut suit in this ensemble’s overall effect.

Rereading this, it sounds as if I really dislike it, but I don’t. Rather I’m offering a largely stream-of-consciousness first impression. And I’m grateful that you chose to share these beautiful things with us.

I wasn't sure I would like it Will, the scarf that is, but find myself enjoying the look.

I both agree and disagree with Tim: yes, the blue scarf would be very nice with the blue suit, and yes, the pink scarf would work well with the safari jacket, but I, like Gabriella, find that the contrast between the blue suit and the pink scarf works nicely.

While blue is always dressier than pink, the summer scarf is intrinsically casual in a way that a suit is not, and again, Tim has a good point. However, the judicious mix of casual and dressy (I hesitate to use the word formal as that has white/black tie connotations) is the mark of a well-dressed man (cf. the Duke of Windsor wearing tassel loafers or slip-on spectators with double-breasted suits).

I also have my misgivings about the weight of the scarf with the suit, but it's a mere quibble. Wear the scarf differently to lessen its minimal bulk and the "problem" is solved.

I thank you, Will, for showing us these great options for wearing a summer scarf. Now I want one, too!

I really like the look. I would say quite close to our Mediterranean way of dressing.
Etro also does lovely scarves.

I'm in western Pennsylvania and even though we're not Dixie, it gets HOT here. I'd pass out from dehydration and heat stroke if I wore a scarf this time of year, even if I wore one in April, in fact.

Have a look at this 1934 summer scarf, worn with a blazer in a tennis court (at page 15 of the PDF):

Will,

How has the Rangoon cloth worked out for your wardrobe? Is it a versitile weight? I have some dark navy worsted in the 8-9oz weight that is yet to be used. Do you consider this weight to be appropriate for year round wear in temperate climates? Or is it better suited to summer weather, say, in Chicago? Thanks!

ESM, eight ounce cloth is not called tropical for no reason. It's best for warm weather and the Minnis Rangoon does a great job in those circumstances.
