Trouser bottoms have long varied in width, from the 17" Oxford bags of the thirties to the six inches of the Conduit Cut in the sixties. Today, they range from half a foot to perhaps twice that.
Fashion aside, the width of a man's trouser bottoms should be individually determined by the size of his thighs, so the fall of the trouser is properly scaled. This is of course another reason why tailored clothing should ideally be made for each individual.
There are a number of modern designers whose offerings have deliberately narrow trousers, perhaps most prominently Mr. Tom Ford. Nothing wrong with that, but it helps explain why the ready to wear version of those clothes looks proportionate only on the thin.

I'd have to jump off of a building to fit into those
Indeed! Proportion is everything.
The 'London Cut' (narrow sleeves, high arm holes, slim shoulders, long vents and thereby a longish skirt) does however lend itself to a trouser which is a little narrower. (Unless you've got Tour de France thighs that is.)
As you rightly fully say though trousers should scale down the leg. That said none of us have angles, only curves so the eye takes precedent over math(ematics).
Still, it's worse being too short!
i like that clown suit, i need it for a play i'm acting on next week.
in the world there's elegance and on the other side is Tom Ford and his shoppers.

One can find clothing unappealing without attacking the designer or those who purchase his/her clothes.
To suggest Tom Ford lacks elegance is frankly silly.
Liking one particular choice/style/thing should not necessitate the derision of all others.
Bespoke is not solely about fit, it's also about personal choice.
I like my clothes to fit. I don't like excess fabric and i like to keep everything streamlined. It makes me wince when i see guys with trouser legs that crumple at the shoe, or baggy shirt sleeves!
i'm sorry i offended Tom Ford and his shoppers, he may continue designing clothes. but really does anyone in the right mind, any normal people shop there? i don't know anyone. even brooks brothers have better taste than him.

You seem to be digging a deeper hole, if I may say so.
Bravo Slim Fit!
Ideal combination for trouser:
Slim Fit
High Rise
Natural Fiber with stretch factor added
Fair Trade
those trousers are perfect but they look so silly.
can someone get him some socks at least.
just don't let tom ford choose them, he'll pick something dotted to complete that crazy ensemble.
Tristan, understand that you have been brainwashed by GQ. Clothing can either be tight or have excess fabric--there is no perfect balance. The irrational fear of comfortable clothing is a problem.
to me it seems like the only people who criticize the slim fit of suits, such as the one in the picture shown above, are those who lack the godlike physique therefore deride such thread and needle deities such as Mr. Ford.
Just get a gym membership and stop complaining fellas.
