Pajama Project Update

I wrote in April (The Shirtmaker Returns) that MyTailor would be making pajamas to measure for me, from nine ounce Irish linen.

Well, the sand-colored prototype pair arrived last month and after two washings (cold water and line dry) they have been proclaimed perfect. The French blue will arrive next.

The point of this project is sleepwear that fits, looks good and lasts at least twice as long as ready to wear pajamas. It is too soon to know about the longevity but MyTailor met the first two criteria with ease.

This design has cream piping on both the jacket and trousers, three jacket pockets, and a trouser waist that closes with a tie because ties last significantly longer than do elastic waistbands.

The Irish linen is heavier than the usual pajama cotton, and the weight will contribute to longevity. The weave of course is open, so they wear cool on top of or beneath bedcovers. And though they rumple over the course of the night, I am perfectly comfortable walking about in them when the plumber arrives earlier than expected.

In summary, a very good start.

Will, I love it. Great idea! Of course, we'll need pictures to assess fit...

Will,

I love them. Great job. I was skeptical at first. I have lived in Derek Rose but they do wear out in about a year of regular use.

Can I ask what cloth merchant book you used to source the fabric?

I am a MyTailor convert based on your suggestions. I told them you referred me so I hope there is some benefit you receive. I always click through your link even to search fabric selections. I have 18 of their shirts and love them.

Another great job.

Cheers,

Carl

This may sound like a stupid question. I have not worn pajamas since I was a child. Do most men wear underwear in addition to the pajama bottoms?

Jason, I have no idea what most men do in this regard. I don't. Maybe I should.

Carl, the book is hopefully on its way to me to use for some more selections and I will make note of it this time.

Pajamas wearing out in a year?

I doubt if even Hughs go that quickly.

4 pairs are required:

2x short for summer
1x brushed cotton for deep winter
1x long poplin for winter

10 years and going strong.

And, of course avoid elasticated affairs at ALL costs.

Don't know how often you launder yours Mr. Brown, but my Derek Rose last about 35 trips through the machine.

And with just four pair they'd be in the laundry all the time. I need eight.

Pajamas from better cloth do considerably better of course.

"when the plumber arrives earlier than expected" - in wich dream-world is that ever going to happen?
But a really nice pajama, noetheless.
Can I order them trough their website?

The cloth is not on the site. Email Joe at mytailor.

Will,

Can you tell us where you placed the piping on the trousers?

I am defanitely planning to discuss these pyjamas with Mytailor.

Cheers,

Carl

Carl, they are piped above the bottoms of the trousers.

Beautiful, just beautiful. Probably above my pay grade.

For decades I have been happy with Brooks Bros.
oxford cloth pajamas which soften with age and
seemed to last forever. A year or two ago I went
to Brooks to replenish my supply and discovered
the "new and improved" version was now wrinkle
free fabric and, of course, made in China. Needless
to say, these did not soften with age and, in fact,
frayed and began to disintegrate before some of
my older pajamas showed their age. Sadly, this
seems to be typical of Brooks products over the past 15 years.

Thank you Will,

That is what I thought but for some reason, I kept wondering if you had piped the leg seam like a tuxedo plant. I could not imagine it but thought I might ask.

funny how sometimes it is hard to get an image out of ones mind.

Cheers,

Carl

I cannot imagine why more men don't sleep in pajamas. They are comfortable and made expressly for that purpose!

To the best of my knowledge, none of the men I know who wear pajamas wear underwear with them, though I sometimes wear a T-shirt under my PJs on cold nights.

I used to be able to make one pair of PJs last a week, but now I generally go 2 to 4 nights before changing them. I take it Will washes his after one wearing.

I, too, hope to see the French blue pajamas after their arrival, though I will understand if you choose not to model them for us.

The Italian linen book arrived. It's L.W. 2020 and has 26 solid colors in what I believe is 9 ounce/270 grams (the weight is not indicated). I'll take some photos.

Will,

There is now a Will's Pajamas link on MYTailor. Well played, well played.

Carl
