Wear Lighter Colored Socks

There is a saying that a man's socks should be the same color as his trousers but a bit darker. Well, when no complementary colored hose are available a pair that is the color of the trousers will do. Just. But I prefer to see them somewhat lighter than the trousers rather than darker.

That is because the eye slides over darker socks to focus on the shoes. That same eye stops at lighter colored socks, and focuses on the combination of trousers, socks and shoes. Which ought to be considerably more interesting.

Wear lighter colored socks.

Will: I like the socks. Are they Marcoliani OTC? I was always told not to wear a patterned sock unless the suit is solid color. I suppose a wide pinstripe is close enough. Shoes look great as well.

Will,

Does your suggestion of wearing lighter colored socks change with the seasons?

I find myself wearing pastels under the sun and in the heat, and deeper hues in the cold and under clouds.

Tony, they are.

SV, I also wear darker colored socks in the fall, but since I am wearing darker suits they are still usually lighter than my trousers.

I usually do, too. I was pairing a pair of vivid block stripes in tomatoe by Marcoliani today, with a mid-grey pinhead 3-piece, red checked shirt and a maroon silk knit-tie, black shoes. Too loud? Well, maybe, but I that's the kind of chap I am!
My pupils really loved them! (My socks are always an item of interest to my pupils, in a positive way)

F. R. Tripler used to sell lovely English lisle socks in steel gray. Liked to wear them with a navy chalk stripe suit and a good, black English oxford.
