I have not held a conventional job for years, and much of the clothing I write about is of marginal utility as work wear. That is because on the job clothes ought to be as close to a uniform as a man's personality will allow, which leaves little to write about. In the photos, the dandy Italian industrialist Luca di Montezemolo illustrates the point with monochromatic perfection.

Gray suit, white shirt and gray necktie in the top photo. Blue suit, white shirt and navy necktie in the bottom. A man should keep it simple so others are focused on what he has to say, not what he is wearing.

What's going on with the button on his pants in the 2nd pic?
Sprezzatura.
Too monochromatic an outfit would make me wonder whether it is deliberately over-coordinated, would make me focus on the messenger and would thus detract from the message. To quote Will's blog on 28th May 2008: "...the idea is to spend the time necessary to look as though no time's been spent at all." A gentle touch of difference in a work-suit-based outfit often appears more natural and keeps the clothes in the background, and maintains the focus on who the person is and what he has to say - the aim of clothing a gentleman.

Well said, Will.
And, in addition to recalling what he said, remembering what he wore is even better.
Here is a clothing article from last year your readers may find interesting:

Enjoy!
whoever said he was a dandy? the industrialist dandy, sounds good for an article of GQ magazine.
Will, To continue this example, can you discuss dressing for business casual (without a blue blazer or odd jacket) including outerwear.
Thanks. Charles
I like the look in the first image and I especially like the article on the detectives kindly supplied by jcard21- almost makes you want to be arrested
Hi Will,
What cloth do you think is used for Luca's blue suit in the second photo? I'd love to have something similar made. Great shade of blue.
Look forward to reading your blog each morning.
Cheers.
Parker, Most likely a worsted but it could also be french blue cotton.
I've gotten more out of your posts for work wear than you might imagine. Many of the concepts you write about can be wonderfully adapted while keeping to the corporate uniform. In fact, one can even express genuine individuality within the details you write about.
