The Blazer Shoe

The strap and buckle shoe is the perfect footwear for the navy blazer, in my opinion. If the blazer and gray flannels are not quite a suit, what could be more appropriate than a great looking shoe that is not quite suitable for wear with a suit?

More commonly known as the monk strap, the chestnut strap and buckle makes a good sixth pair of dress shoes in a wardrobe. Like the blazer, it will do for the office when it must, but it is more comfortable dressed up on the weekend.

And there it shines. Give me a mottled brown monk strap toe under my flannels and I am a happy man.

Thanks for the thoughts, Will. Because of ASW's influence I have EG monks in redwood antique (the Westminster) and burnt pine (the Ashby). Well suited for nonsuiting wear of odd trousers and jackets. No one in my circles wear monks, which makes me like the choice even more.

The Edward Green monk choices are superb. I think they make some of the best ready made shoes available today. The Ralph Lauren versions always seem tasty to me as well.

Will,

Thanks for giving monks their due with those beautiful examples.

Allow me to dissent, however, with the view that they cannot quite keep up with a suit. The monk's unfussy appearance and buckle make it a simple, elegant companion in this person's opinion (there may be different, fussier versions that look less appropriate however).

I like the Westminster. Great article !!!! Love to wear them with white or bright-coloured pants under a classic double breasted of deconstructed blazer ! I've written an article about them on my blog as well (http://belgiandandy.blogspot.com)
