Knit neckties, like the one worn by the Marquis Luca Cordero di Montezemolo on the left in the photo, make the best neckties for travel. Roll them up in a shoe and they emerge unscathed, unlike most conventional silks of my acquaintance. Black and navy blue versions, with and without dots, should be in every serious dresser's wardrobe.
Perfectly acceptable during the day, knits have the additional advantage of being slightly unexpected. The Italians call it sprezzatura. I call it smart packing.

Rolling neckwear for storage and transport whether woven or knit is a good idea I was told as a young man.
Still true.
He'a not actually a marquis:

Great tip. Robert Benchley used to say that packing for a trip is like making love to a dowager: careful with the folds and creases and press firmly at the end.

Will, I've got five of these, and on 2 or 3, when I tie them, the seam that is on the back somehow presses forward and forms a line on the surface that becomes very visible, even on the knot.
I wonder whether it has something to do with the quality of the construction (one of them I got from New & Lingwood, another is a cheaper one...), or is it normal for this type of ties. Thanks
Good call, I would really like hearing more about smart packing, and the appropriate way to travel; with fine clothing. Grande, grazie.
