A Striped Grenadine Necktie

Silk grenadines are, with knits, my favorite neckties. I like the way the weave adds surface interest to the vee of jacket, shirt and necktie, and over the years I have accumulated nearly a dozen solids in colors ranging from silver to mid-blue.

I should have known better, but just when I thought I had acquired all the grenadine a man could desire, I found that grenadines do not have to be solids. There are two striped versions in my wardrobe now, and I am sporting one of them today.

This is of course a pre-opening tease for the ASW online store where the striped grenadine in the photo (55" long and 3 1/2" wide) will be offered for $130 a necktie.

So, what's your take on whether they should slant from right to left, or vice versa. In my experience, English ties slant down from left to right. American slant from right to left.
I have always attributed this to the more conservative orientation of American political thought. :))

Gorgeous tie - made by Drakes I take it, to judge by the 'M' visible at the edge of the label? I hope they'll be offering them in the UK.

The slant of the stripes has more to do with the American desire to copy English regimental colorways without offending the well-armed members of the various regiments.

I don't recall which was which but one of my grenadines is exclusive. The other was offered to retailers generally however I don't believe Drakes will have it on their site. I will of course ship outside the United States...

Great tie. 3.5" is a bit wide for me ... I'm in at 3" to 2.75"

Those are some narrow lapels you're wearing Youngin. I've got a great photo of Sinatra and Peter Lawford wearing dinner jackets with two inch lapels in 1962 that I will post after Labor Day.

Speaking of ties, I just picked up four. $4.38 with tax at the antique store. (If they don't work out, they can tie up my tomato plants ;)

I have a handsome striped grenadine from Turnbull and Asser. A beautiful tie, though it's only 3 inches, I think, a bit too narrow for most jackets, like you said.

I want the one under the Grenadine, second from left. Wool?

Will - is that a bit longer than a standard tie length ? I generally find normal ties a bit short - I'm 6.0 foot with a 16.5 collar. What do Drakes ties normally measure ?

I believe Drakes are normally about 58".

JC, the tie under the grenadine is cashmere.

I love the texture of grenadine, but plain ties are too staid for my (clothing) personality. At last, I will get to enjoy the wonderful weave of the grenadine!

With regards to the slant, I do recall reading once (I think it was in 'The Suit', but I have to check again) that the English slant - from left to right - is supposed to guide the eye into generalizing the upper body as a 'V' and creating an overall balance. The way I see it, the right to left forces the eye to start at the pocket square and keep going down, down, in the same direction until it has nowhere to go! Maybe this is extreme.
