Wanted: A Tailor's Dummy

A reader wrote last week asking for an illustrated series showing how to accessorize navy and gray suits to provide a variety of looks. That sounds like an excellent idea, if I can work out the details of how to do it in less than a month without hiring three photographic assistants. And one conclusion I reached quickly is that I need to locate a tailor's dummy for the clothes.

Now in addition to the inevitable comments relating tailor's dummies to yours truly, I am hoping to get a bit of help here. You see, I have not been able to find a proper one so far and I anticipate that a reader can point me to something more classic looking than the ladies sewing dummies available on eBay. Said form will be installed in the small photo studio I am setting up North of the City. With luck, the process of usefully illustrating ASW will become quite a bit easier, and that will be better for all of us.

Assuming, of course, that a reader can point me to a tailor's dummy.

You might contact this person. I know someone who purchased one of the store display types for a woman. It was a cream with a wood base. I wanted to buy one like hers, but couldn't get the measurements to match up. She wanted a model for her sewn clothing to show on her blog. It's a hobby that several women I know have.

Jump to page 18 on the ebay store. I can't email on this computer, just my husbands. I don't know this woman but the one Lindsey got is really pretty.

Might you also inquire at AAAC? I know of at least 3 tailors who visit, and suspect you know more.

Why not just lay out the combos on an
inclined board or drafting table of some kind?

Rigging any form to look like something worth photographing takes loads of effort. It really does.

If you are going to buy a form, the only name that matters is Wolf of Englewood NJ. They are handmade of reinforced paper, batting, canvas and cast iron. They aren't cheap; I suspect, however, you wouldn't entrust your wardrobe, even in this experimental capacity, to anything that was. Happily, the form has application following your research; mine works wonderfully while steaming and brushing garments prior to or following wear. It also looks great in my study next to some old filing cabinets. http://www.wolfform.com/

Frederick, that is exactly what I was hoping to find.

Thanks to all who suggested solutions.

Wolf forms are the best. Also remember to order the bust form in the size that best fits closest to your off-the-peg size.
