A Gentleman and Two Icons

I visited two clothing icons and a well-dressed gentleman at Turnbull & Asser in New York the other day, one of the icons being the T&A smoking jacket that is, in my opinion, the best version of its kind. In green velvet it is the model I would choose for myself should I ever feel extravagant enough to want another (smoking jackets and the term need are rarely associated with each other).

The other icon was this made to measure robe in yellow silk, one of the great clothing related luxuries to which a man can aspire. Once the specialty of the late and lamented Sulka, a properly detailed silk robe is hard to find except at either T&A or Charvet in Paris.

The well dressed gentleman is of course Robert Gillotte, senior bespoke manager at T&A and the man to see to chat about clothes while purchasing a robe or a smoking jacket on 57th Street.

The following clip of Astaire in 1934 features a superb silk dressing gown.

I don't recall seeing your smoking jacket featured here. Perhaps you'll treat us to a look this winter?

Rob Gillotte is one of the sartorial landmarks of New York City.

Bluchers with a suit - I am aghast!

Thank you for this wonderful picture. Mr. Gillotte looks spectacular. The suit of course fits beautifully, but I am especially impressed with how his pocket square works with his shirt and tie - it makes all the difference. While the shirt, suit and tie is a combination I've done myself, I would never try adding a pocket square such as that, and am much poorer for it.

I, too, have long admired that smoking jacket in bottle green, and hope to add one to my wardrobe some day. However, regardless of its beautiful details, I'm afraid that I wouldn't be able get to sleep at night with a silk robe that loud in my house.

Robert is a treaure -- a sherpa, consiliari, swami, therapist, compass, and friend to many of us in NYC. If you get a chance seek his counsel.

i've always been in love with T&A silk robes, they have a purple dotted one i have admired for some time.
i don't think that man is such a good dresser. the silk in his pocket belong with another attire.

T&A makes a nice smoking jacket, but their off-the-rack clothes and shirts do not fit well. Better to have the jacket made.
